Car is knocking and I can't figure out where it is coming from.

My car has had a slight knock for about three years now.

It never does it when the motor is cold. It takes about 10 minutes or so for it to start. I use 20w-50.

It is not exhaust related.

I notice it more when I am taking off and turning like at a corner stop sign.

The knock goes away if your remove the load. IE. idling in neutral or by turning the AC off.

The car runs great. It has progressively gotten quicker. Started out at a 13.60 car and is now a high 11 car.

I have not checked for a thrust bearing. What does one sound like, if any sound at all?

The oil pan has not been off so I don't know what the bearings look like. I have 20 psi at idle when it's 110 degrees outside. I have about 45 psi driving at 60MPH. It goes up from there with RPM.

What does the tranny drum sound like when it's going out?

Anything else that can cause this?

I have not checked the line pressure.

This is probably been checked already, but look to see if your flex plate is cracked and/or walking around on the converter mount.

I checked for flexplate cracks but not "walking around on the converter mount? What do you mean by this?

This could be the differential. It can make funny noises going around corners. GN's have limited slip diff. as standard equipment. You do need to change the fluid AND limited slip additive in them, it's not "lifetime". It's worth it if you never have done this before. I don't know if this would knock loudly, though.

Also, it could be the exaust pipes hitting some where. The mounts for them do sometimes come off. But I don't know why this last idea would only happen hot.

The Trans "drum" you are thinking about is the sun shell. These tend to just totally strip all at once, then you have first only, no other gears. But it sounds like they can clunk before failing. I hope you have a beefed up trans with an improved pickup running in the 11's! You can kill the trans with fluid starvation with the stock filter set up at that quickness!!

It could be the crank thrust bearing, as well. -Mike H.

It's not the rearend. The car knocks at idle.

The exhaust is not hitting anywhere. If it was the exhaust, I am sure it would do it all the time. It starts knocking after it's warmed up.

I do have a clunk when I put it in gear. Maybe it's the tranny.
