My tranny makes a noise under load. Sounds just like an old power steering pump when it is low on fluid. You know, the whining or groaning noise. It has seemed sluggish since I bought the car a few weeks ago, floats into gears when I get on it, shifts aren't firm at all. Fluid level is good. Is this a common problem and does this mean I am in for tranny trouble soon?

It's likely that the torque converter is on its way out. Better get it checked out soon as it can lead to a roadside breakdown.

Does it make any sense to replace the TC and not have a complete rebuild?

You could try a new TC. If the trans fluid has (any) metalic looking material or is burnt/brown etc.. don't bother. You'll just crud up a new converter.

Would a stock hot air trany hold up to a 2800 stall converter and a shift kit?
