Transmission is shifting into 3rd only at a really high rpm and will not shift into 4th at all. Also seems to occasionally not shift into reverse. I took pressure readings according to the ATSG manual. They are

Minimum TV Pressure Check @1000rpm

Park 135
Neutral 135
Reverse 150
Drive D4 145
D3 145
D2 135
D1 135

Full TV Line Pressure Check@1000rpm
Park 175
Neutral 175
Reverse 75
D4 170
D3 170
D2 135
D1 135

I know some of these are way off. I'm just hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Funny thing is I checked the Minimum pressures first and they were all normal, then I checked the Full pressures and they all were high except for Reverse which was way low. I then reconnected the TV cable and rechecked the minimums and they were all high also. I tried wiggling the cable around and messing with it but I couldn't get the pressures to go back down in the minimum position. Could something in there be stuck or binding up? I have not driven the car since taking the pressures since they were so out of whack. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanx for the help.

could be a stuck int/rev boost valve for the low 1-2 and rev press, and the press staying high at minimum now could be stuck tv valve or exhaust checkball???

what is the pressure drop on a manual 1/2 shift?has the trans been recently disassembled/repaired?sounds like a missassembled boost line up or leaking signal oil pipe on the vbody.

Thanx for the input guys. I've been away from the car for awhile but its back on the priority list. I think I've got something going out. I started over from square one and retook all my pressure readings and they were quite a bit different from the first time.

min TV @ 1000rpm

Park 60
Neutral 60
Reverse 85
D4 60
D3 60
D2 140
D1 140

Max TV @ 1000rpm

Park 140
Neutral 140
Reverse 100
D4 150
D3 150
D2 130
D1 130

I test drove the car and did the Manual 1 2 shift and could not see any drop. The needle does not hold steady though so it might have dropped 2 or 3 psi but not a major drop. Vibrates at about a 20 psi range on the gauge. 2 3 goes from around 140 to 60. Gauge holds a steady reading in park, neutral, D3 and D4. Bounces around in Reverse and D1 and D2. Vibrates at about a 10 psi up and down from readings I took. Transmission has not been recently messed with. It developed the problem on its own. Also Tranny is slipping real bad in reverse now. What do I do now?... drop the pan and check the valve body or is this thing fubar? Thanx for the help.

update

I hate it when people solve their problem but then don't post the solution so here goes. I dissassembled the transmission and the seals and clutches in the direct drum were totally gone. This was the only thing that had major wear. Also the lo 1st detent valve in the valve body seemed to be in a bind when I dissassemble it. Also, I didn't realize that there was a clip that held the back of the filter up in the transmission. Mine was missing before I got the car I guess and I hadn't noticed. Didn't see this till I was at a tranny shop looking at another 200r4. The TV valve and spring seemed to be in good order as I watched it operate while I had someone else pushing on the accelerator. Anyway I installed new clutches, steels and alto wide band and cleaned everything up and solved above problems and now its shifting good..... so far.

hmmmm

Well, I kinda thought that too but I saw a junk 200r4 and the clip was holding the filter up on it. I started experimenting on mine with the clip and it seemed like to me it was supposed to hold it down at first, but if you did it that way the filter was kinda at an angle in the bore. With the clip holding the filter up it seemed to look right and hold everything in place at the right angle. I tried searching for some info on this and have found nothing. No problem too drop the pan and flip it around if thats the way it goes. Anybody else??

yes, although it doesn't appear to look right, it is meant to hold the filter down on the pan. You want to keep the filter as low as possible to prevent sucking air.

Ok, I've had some more input on this and rather than start an argument, I have one question. When the car came from the factory was the clip A. holding the filter down or B. holding the filter up. Don't answer if you don't know.

ATSG calls it a filter retainer clip.

the clip (from the factory) was made to hold the filter down. This is fact not speculation. Look at the top of the filter, if the clip is in the proper place on the vb it should fit right in the small dimple (depression) in the back plastic top of the filter.
