I made a big mistake. I took my Buick to a transmission shop for a diagnosis of the tranny problems I was having. I thought they knew what they were doing. I was wrong.
The symptoms were: The car would redline easily and not shift into 2nd gear if you gave it any throttle. If you barely accelerated it was fine. I had messed with the TV cable for 2 weeks without success. I explained these symptoms to Bill (the tranny guy) when I dropped the car off 3 weeks ago. Bill said they would call me a couple days later when the car was in the shop.
2 weeks passed and Bill never called. I stopped by and asked Bill what was up. Bill said he adjusted the throttle pressure and the tranny was 100% better, but still needed fine tuned. He said I didn't owe him anything, instead he wanted me to bring the car back to him when it was finished and ready for fine tuning. Oh yeah, he didn't want to fine tune it because he heard a noise when he got on it hard. I told Bill there was no noise. What do you mean? So, I took it for a drive...Sure enough, the car shifted exactly like it did before Bill adjusted the throttle pressure...like sh!t!! But, the engine ran perfect and surprise, surprise, ...no noise. The engine only has 300 miles on the rebuild and ran beautifully.
I got back to the tranny shop and explained to Bill that he had done nothing for the tranny and there was no noise. The only noise to come out of the engine at normal RPMs was BOOST. He was dumbfounded. "Explain it to me again", Bill said. Again, I went through my redline symptoms. "Oh, I never thought of it like that. I thought the TV cable was out of adjustment. Let me drive it again", Bill said. Off Bill went in my Buick while I waited at the shop. 5-10 minutes later he rolled in and immediately parked the car outside the lot where I was waiting and turned the car off. I thought it sounded funny, but I couldn't say for sure. Bill quickly started talking as soon as he got out of the car saying things about my car as to impress me with its speed and power. "What all have you done to that thing?" It's a stock car (you dumbass.) Then he said, "well, we can take the pan off, but it's gonna be a couple days before I get a free bay. I will call you when I get a look at it." Sounded good to me, so I left it there.
A few more days passed with no call. My fiance called the shop and Bill said the tranny needed rebuilt, but I needed to work more on the engine than the tranny because the car was running so poorly. WTF. I couldn't go to the shop because I was outta town. As soon as I got back into town I went to the shop. I asked Bill what he meant by the car running bad. Bill said, "You know, it runs just like before, when I get on it there is a noise I don't like." I asked if there was any actual noise when the car was at idle. Bill said no. So, I paid Bill the $75 for the tranny inspection and we went out to listen to the car. Started it up and F*CK!!!! It sounded like a "pshh, pshh, pshh, pshh" Like an exhaust leak from one of the headers. It was very distinct not constant, but one right after the other pshh. I explained to Bill that it didn't do that when I brought it in. He said,"yeah, it started doing that when I was driving it one time." ^&)(*&*)^%)*!!!%*%#@!!! Finally, I got tired of looking at Bill's dumb face and told him that I was gonna have it checked out, implying that he was going to get a bill.
I left the shop and the noise only worsened...I mean BAD!!! It is a ping or knock of some kind and sounds like it is coming from the passenger side head. I got it home and I was fuming. I wanted to go back in there and beat his butt, but my father-in-law said he would go talk to him instead. He did and had mixed results. Bill said he did nothing to make the car run the way it was, but then said he wanted an estimate of the damages before I went to get it fixed. Bill kept going back and forth with no real solution.
Where do I go from here? I need some help before I go in there and make myself look like an ass.
Oh, where should I get my tranny work done? I was thinking about ordering one from Postons. The car is in Marysville Ohio, near Columbus. Any advice?
Thanks for letting me fume.
