Trans Brake !!! How hard is it on tranny?

I have a Century Trans rebuild with around 8000 m.i. on it an it has one .. It is ingaged by putting the trans in 1st gear an from there you manually shift form 2nd to 3rd "fun :frown: with a column shift I would imagine"..
My question is how much damage could I possibly do messing around with this t-brake.. I have never used it. An everything else on car is pretty HD IMO to take it.. Best 60 f.t. on MT Dr's has been last Sun with 1.56 @ 11:23 @ 118 on 21 lbs mon mostly pump gas..
 
I've never had a Transbrake my self but that sounds more like a manual valve body to me. Usualy, you have to rev it to a certain RPM with a brake and then press a botton to set it. Then when the light turns green, you press the botton again and the car launches at the pre set RPMs. Again, I'm pretty new to brakes...but may end up buying one my self.
 
99% of them work flawless.

I love mine. No problems.

A little rough on the axles and driveshaft though.
 
The most I have tried to leave out on is 11 lbs on MT Dr's an cut the previous 1.56... I wonder how the Dr's would do on 15 lbs off the t-brake. I just think it will be hard to watch an get the right shift point on the 2 to 3 shift using the column shift..
 
when jimmy built my trans he did not recomend a trans brake on a street car??? he siad its tough on the trans, but i still want one. what are most people running??

It shouldn't matter if it is a street car or not. You can still use the foot brake if you don't think it would hook off the trans-brake

What kind of dr's are you guys running?? BFG's or ET street radails???
 
m/t's and they hook but i loved it im my blown camaro and i wanted one for the regal

My uncle had one in his buick it ran 9.40's@141mph but their are some guys around here with them in more streetable cars but I don't belive the keep the 200r they go to the 700r or a 350t with a brake. Stronger+cheaper

The 700 R-4 is not any stronger than the 200 4-R imo. I have t-brakes in my cars with the 200-4r's. Hard to use one on the street unless you get great weight transfer and have a good hot set of slicks on it. Otherwise you will just boil the tires or even deload the engine if trying it with a low boost launch. I have not a seen a failure in a 200 related to the t-brake yet. Im sure someone would have posted if they had a roller clutch failure or such. If you dont go to the strip you dont need one. It doesnt do anything just being there though. Cant hurt anything but your wallet if its never used.
 
I am no expert on trans brakes, but isn't the concensus pretty much that they are harder on axles, driveshaft, rear end etc. due to the "tire shocking" factor, but are relatively safe on the trans itself? If you are able to build 11 lbs on the foot brake, you are already stressing those parts so I say go for it and launch it off the brake. Those MT DR's love to be shocked!
 
Best way to lower ET's is to launch as hard and fast as possible to get the lowest 60ft time.
Best way to do that is with a transbrake.
If you are worried about breaking parts, buy stronger parts. :cool:

Depends on the traction and turbo. Usually your looking at 10psi minimum for a t-brake launch. Use the foot brake for anything lower.

Since this is your brothers car I'm sure you know what Sy/Ty owners put there transmissions through. I cringe imagining what was going on in my tranny during a 10+psi launch.

Sounds like you have a Stage Right transbrake in there. They work just fine, I have one in mine, haven't used it at the track yet though. I've messed around with mine in the driveway and on some back roads and it does fine.

I'm running a TE44 ( set at 15psi ATM) and some M/T DR's. I've never been able to really see what I can do since I'm having gear box issues.


So how does a Stage Right transbrake work?

the day i installed mine, i tried it out at least 10 times and it never broke.. I can NEVER go back to foot brake launches
