Trans linkage?

Just reinstalled rebuilt trans and I can't remember which way the linkage goes on. The rod that comes down the firewall from the steering column, is it supposed to point toward the back or the front of the car when it goes through the two holes of the gear selector lever? Thanks

Toward the front of the car.

So when the rod goes through the two holes in the shift linkage, on the trans, it goes through the rear hole first and then trough the front hole. right? I should have taken a picture.

Yes, at least that's the way mine is connected.

Yup, that's the way they fit. Could it be reversed? Seems like a pretty specific bend to me...
