Which transmission Fluid (brand) is the best to use in my 86 GN. It is a stock transmission that has a orange strip converter installed. I was thinking about using Mobil 1 synthetic, but someone in the parts store advised me to use royal purple synthetic trans. Fluid. Can anyone help? Thanks!

For a stock trans, regular Dexron fluid would be sufficient. Not sure you need the expensive Royal Purple on a stock trans.

I run trick shift in my lonnie diers stage one and in my stage two with no problems . Made by b&m . But regular dextron will work also .. Just not as high of a heat range ..

Transmission fluid doesn't need heat to work like motor oil so colder the better. Either way, use the synthetic of your choice so you do have the extended heat range should you drive it hard on a hot day. Dextron will be fine, but is just "fine" what you're looking for? FWIW, I've used Amsoil ATF for 50k miles and 120+ passes now. I even used it on the stock trans with just a shift kit for over 30k miles and it liked it fine. The turbo is what made the stock trans get loose...

I have been running Ford tranny fluid for a couple years now with no problem.

Trans fluid does need heat to prevent Oxidation & Condensation making a home in the Trans which is as bad as in an Engine. The Glue/Bonding agent used on Clutch Frictions is water based. Driving in cold weather with an External/Auxillary Trans Cooler only can allow Condensation to never be boiled/cooked off.
Ideal Temp is 175*-225*F. >> Transmission Life Expectancy - TCI® Auto

Stock Trans, Dexron III, Type-F, DexMerc. Much cheaper than Synthetics but doesn't protect as well.

Transmission Fluid Recommendations
[FONT=Myriad Pro,Myriad Pro][FONT=Myriad Pro,Myriad Pro]There are many types of transmission fluids available. EA recommends The following.
1.) Our first choice is Dextron 6. Dextron 6 can be found at most automotive parts stores. Dextron 6 has superior heat and lubricating properties over Dex 3 and Type F. Dex 6 will handle long periods of extended temperature while providing maximum protection against damage to the seals and clutches of your 2004R. Dex 6 offers good shift quality with additional heat protection. Not as firm as Type F but firmer than Dex 3.
2.) Type F fluid. Type F will provide The best shift quality and firmness. Type F does not provide the heat protection of Dex 6 but does offer slightly firmer shifts. Type F is a good choice for those who desire good shift quality and change transmission fluid often. When Type F is used transmission fluid should be changed as soon as you notice the color start to change to a darker color.
3.) Dextron 3 is our last choice. Your transmission will operate properly using Dex 3 although its our last choice. Dex 3 offers the smoothest shift quality. Dex 3 must be changed often.

ive been told hydrolic fluid works best and doest take away clutch material like some transmision fluids with detergents ?

I went with the Mobil1 synthetic trans. Fluid. I was going for the. Royal purple, I heard great things about it, but didn't want to fork out The extra 30bucks for it. the mobil1 is compatible with dex. II, III, IV, and VI transmissions, so I guess I made the right / good choice from what I read in the response from "turbo nasty" about dex 6. Since the Mobil1 is good for dex 3 and 6 and it is synthetic, I should ok. right?
