When I purchased my 86 GN 11 years ago I only had Reverse, Neutral, Drive (not really) and Overdrive. In drive I had a rod knock but not in overdrive. Since I didn't have either 2 or 1, I just figured the transmission needed to be fixed. Well, 2 years ago I lost the trans and had it rebuilt. The guy who rebuilt it said that it had a nice shift kit and he just packed it. Now as for the rod knock, that has cost me an engine rebuild. The problem that I have is that sometimes the transmission changes at high rpm's then immediately changes into the next gear. I have heard of guys burning pistons with the high rpm's. The guy I had rebuild the transmission has "gone into the wind" and hasn't been heard from in almost 1 year and can't check it out. Anyone have any similar problems? Is this bad for my rebuilt engine?

Welcome to the site!

I would have to say that if your trans isn't shifting well it needs to be looked into by someone.
You don't say where you reside but that might make a difference in who gets recommended.

I reside in the Western Suburbs of Chicago. A friend suggested a trustworthy shop in the area when I had the trans rebuilt. My mechanic said that he really didn't like the way it shifts but said that it should be good. I have not been jumping on it since it is going to be tuned next week. After that, I want to make sure that I don't blow it up for the 3rd time. The first two times weren't my fault.

Chicago = Jimmy's for local trans work though I have heard he might not be doing as many
