I bought a TA51 which may be a PT51 or a mix-up of some sort. Bought from a board member under the impression it was a
good, ready to go part. What I got was a
part that will need servicing before I can use it on my car. The guy disclosed slight shaft play within "normal" specs. There is up and down movement of the impeller/propeller of about 1/8-1/4". Is that "normal"? There were also some oil stains on it but the guy said that it didn't leak. Seems it may need bearing and possibly seals to be usable. That's what happens when trust is placed on the wrong people. I should have spent some more cash for the Chinese piece of crap unit and probably be using it that darn thing right now instead of having this one in the box it came in. Excuse the rant. Anyway, are there any DIY bearing/seal kits available or should it just be serviced by a turbo shop? Trying to save what I thought to be a good deal. I should really stop buying used parts and save for the expensive new parts available thru the vendors. I'll be spending too much either way.

Here is one link I found in my favorites.

I've never dealt with them however.

You will need detailed info. on that particular turbo to get parts for it.

Turbo Rebuild Kits

what is up and down play? If you pull up on both wheels at the same time and there is play, thats not good. If you are reaching in and pulling up on one wheel at a time, then that is radial play and some radial play is normal. Are there signs of wheel contact with the housings? Where are the oil stains at? They almost always leak at some point from the return line from loose bolts or deformed return line flanges, so oil stains on the center section is not a sign that the internal seals themselves are leaking.

How about you sell me that PT51 or2 which ever it is....

If its got 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch of play theres a good chance it will need oversize bearings.

A.j.

if you think about it $ 100.00 for the rebuild kit and shops usually charge around $ 250.00 to do a rebuild, not worth doin it yourself in my opinion. Just my .02

Sure bud. Just pay what I paid for it. If I don't sell it, I'll have it serviced and keep it.

Thank you for the info you're right plus they got the tool and experiencE on getting done right the first time.

Stains are from WD--40 when it was stored as I was told. What I did was move the shaft at both end with both indx fingers to see how much play there was. I didn't apply any force, mind you. It sound like the back end hits but haven't openned it up yet. I think I will let the pros take care of it once I get funds to do so. Thanks for the responses guys.

Based on your original post you should not be attempting to service a turbocharger. You have not posted any pics/video of the shaft play and are asking about seals. This all tells me that you have never had one apart and dont know what to look for. If there is no in out thrust and the wheels are not hitting the housings your best bet is to install it and try it before you post up that you got hosed. If you think your spending "too much" either way you should find another hobby.

Keep your unsolicited advise to yourself. I needed to know your thoughts on that PM you ignored. I don't need your advise period. I can tell you are buddies with whomever sold me that turbo. It's my money and I do as I please with it. Nobody is born all knowing like you. I had never had a TB before and I replaced the cam all by myself just reading about it. It's not rocket science and you aren't Einstein. If you were, you would have read my last post about having the turbo serviced by the pros. That is really stupid advice to use a worn out part and see if it blows up then if it does, I know for sure I got a screwed up deal? Wow. Get off that cloud man. You may know the seller of my turbo and you may know everything about TB's but you don't know me. Gotta love the forum vigilantes who come to the aid of their buddies in distress. I have left out the name of the seller and I told him why. Add to your siggy that you won't offer Unsolicited, useless advice as well. This thread was done before you realized it.

Take a chill pill dude. Brian is just feed up with the BS questions he's gets all the time. Trust me because I have the same thing happen to me. He's been here longer than I have and he's helped me several time but we still but heads once in a while. He's offered his advice and I would at least take it under advisement. Don't just blow him off because you're pissed off for some reason.

I'm chilling since days ago dude. I got over it and was trying to see about fixing the part Before it broke into useless pieces. If the guy is fed up, that's his business just don't take it out on me by posting more BS. I wouldn't doubt yall's knowledge but if you choose not to share it with ignorant like me, then that's your prerrogative. If he blows me off by ignoring my PM when I ask for help then I don't care for his malicious advise. Don't come tell me what to do. Life goes on. Hope nobody else takes sides here.

I'm not taking sides here, I'm doing my job as a moderator and trying to keep the peace. Please keep that in mind.

Not taking sides? You told me to chill but not the other guy. I'm sure you are a good moderator and will continue to be. This post should be closed so it doesn't get too much out of hand. I have already received the help I was seeking thanks to those who posted unbiased Info. Have a great holiday!!
