Generally, what would be considered an allowable (within tollerance) amount of up and down shaft play on a TE44 that has been sitting for a few months? There is NO back and forth play at all, just some up and down movement that concerns me. I filled the turbo's oil inlet hole with 10w40 and spun the turbin by hand to circulate the oil....no noticeable change in shaft play either good or bad. As a sidenote, there is NOT enough play to cause the fins to touch the inner housing. Is there a way to measure shaft play without taking the turbo apart?? As always TIA...

Sounds OK. Some up and down/front to back end play is normal as long as it isn't hitting the housings.

No noticeable end play is required. That is to say, you shouldn't be able to feel/see it.

as long as the fins don't hit the housing it will be ok as oil
pressure around the bearing will center the shaft.

Well I FINALLY got my new battery and was FINALLY able to start the TTA to see what happens as far as shaft play is concerned. After running for 10 minutes or so to allow for fluids to circulate and to check for leaks and such, I pulled the inlet pipe off and checked the shaft play. As things would have it, the shaft play is considerbly less when compared to the play when the turbo was off the car:) I drove the TTA to work tonight and was pleasantly surprised how fast the turbo spooled up to 25 psi before I pulled my foot out of it... This is with OE squirters and converter. On the
t-brake I can only get 10 psi, but that's ok for now. Believe it or not, there is really NO turbo lag on the road....not enough to warrant a looser converter just yet. My 50's should be here soon...can't wait to get back to the track and see what kind of MPH it will pull now:) Thanks to all that shed thier opinions on this matter. As far as I'm concerned, this matter is closed....Thanks!
