i have gone through two upper radiator hoses the past two weeks. this last one was my fault cause i didnt prevent it from rubbing on the pulley. does anyone else have the problem with the upper radiator hose rubbing against the water pump(i think) pulley? and is everyone else using the hose that is a generic ribbed flex hose? do they make a normal hose that is bent to fit on our cars and not a flex kind for the upper radiator hose?

It isn't a generic hose. Check Kirbins or almost any of the vendors...
I believe there's a small bracket that kinda holds the hose up off the pulley. Too cold out to go look just now.:)

I'm never gonna finish this car!:(

Yes, there is a bracket that supports the upper radiator hose. You should be able to go to any parts store and get a molded upper radiator hose that is made just for your car.

The lower one maybe, but the upper one hasn't been available in a long time.

a bracket? where is this mysterious bracket?
if possible could someone describe where it connects to on the engine or wherever, how it connects and holds the hose up off the pulley?
man, all i did was put an intercooler on with the duttweiler neck. i knew i had to mess up something on the car even though i was performing such an easy job;) never had a hose problem before until after that.

The bracket attaches to the long stud that mounts your belt tensioner. Yup, Kirban's has repros that take care of your problem. Dayco, I know for absolute certainty, makes the upper rad hose for our cars.

standing at the front of the car and looking at the engine. . .
where does the upper radiator hose usually route too? is it on the left side of the intercooler neck and uppipe(in between the intercooler necks)? or is it to the right? if its too the right then i think my intake will be in the way.

The part# for the Dayco upper is 71755 listed for the '87 but not '86 . Can't imagine why it'd be different, probably just a catalog glitch.

You can order both upper and lowers from just about any auto store, I bought 5 of each not long ago just incase they do quit making them before I needed another :)

Not.

You can get both hoses from regular parts stores, but not a technically correct lower hose. Nobody (meaning regular "and many" Buick parts suppliers) sells the lower with the spring inside anymore. Not even the dealer. John's Performance has them though.

Maybe you got lucky and found some old stock with springs. Yes, no?

For some reason the link didn't work. Go to johnsperformance.com click on On line Cagalog the go to Odds-n-ends.

Yes, GM still has both the upper & lower hoses. http://www.partszoneonline.com/contactUs.html even has pics on there of the 2 I got from them a while back. The lower comes with the spring. Once in a while you'll get a defective one that has the spring missing. They'll replace it.

I only tried local Buick and GM dealers. They physically checked their stock and no springs. Even if partsonline.com can maybe get you the right one the first time, why pay for maybe? A definitely right every time hose can be ordered online from John. That availability may go away if he doesn't sell enough. Wish all this stuff would not be disappearing from inventories.

I replaced my upper hose one time and the old one I pulled off had the flow direction arrow printed on it pointed the opposite way from the new hose. So I tried installing the hose both ways, and it fit both ways, but one way was better than the other. The new hose had the flow arrow printed the right way, the old hose actually fit better if I installed it with the arrow pointed back to the engine. So, don't trust the arrow, try it both ways and see if it fits better "backwards".

The arrow should have been pointed toward the motor. Water goes in the motor through the thermostat and out through the water pump.....

That's why when I ordered mine from Bill Sr. at PartsZone, I asked him to verify the spring was inside. When I order from him, I just call and give him a Visa # and email him a list of things. The stuff shows up a few days later, no problems so far after several orders...
