Hey guys, I am looking at buying a 86 T-Type and I have this wierd feeling about the VIN plate on the dash cause the rivits don't look factory. Where else on the car would the VIN be just so I can double check. I know on older cars it's on the frame sometimes but I have no idea on this car.

The RPO sticker is gone from the inside of the trunk lid as well as the stickers in the door jamb cause it has been painted.

Any help you can give me would be great.

I don't know whare to find another vin number, But if you have a funny feeling about it, you can run the vin from the plate and see if the info you get back agrees with the car. Possibly ask the current owner about the cars history and see if it jives with the carfax report. Just an idea.

Vin # locations are i believe as follows:
1. frame/exact location unknown
2. RPO sticker
3. engine block
4. transmission/somewhere near pan on side or toward rear from what i'm told
Might also want to grab one of kirban's books (how to buy a turbo regal) to better educate yourself on these cars before making a final decision on purchase.
Oh, I forgot to mention that only the last 6 digits of the vin will appear on engine and trany.

pull off the drivers door sill plate its stamped in the middle in the body with the last 6 digits of the vin

Tread real lightly when it comes to these cars- I looked to buy one a few years back, and a little digging revealed an '85 NA Regal that had been done up to look like the GN.

No emotional decisions- trust in the facts, and walk if the facts don't mesh.

Having looked at at least 25 different cars. Owning 4
off and on.2 cars, now owned. I would take a hard look at those rivets.
Also does this person have any purchase, records. when new?

There should also be a paint code on the top of the firewall.
Code 18 is black. I had my car just painted. Replaced a trunk. Guy through my codes out. So I'm willing to go with that.

One last thought. Was this car stolen ever.
Because they take the trunk code off. At least in NY.

Almost bought a gn in 98'. codes where missing.
Turned out it was bought at auction. And put back to be like new.

Someone out there has my stolen GN from 97'. I won't buy it back because of the destruction of the car.
Be careful. ...............HTH'ed....

I've parted out many of these cars and this is what I have found:

The VIN is stamped on the outside of the driver side frame rail. Undercoating and corrosion will make it hard to see. The body has to be unbolted from the frame and lifted up off the frame to see the number.

The original trans and engine were both stamped with a partial VIN. The engine is stamped on a pad by the starter and the trans on a pan rail by the Broadcast code TAG. The last 8 digits of the partial VIN will should match the last 8 digits of the VIN on the VIN plate.

I've never seen the VIN stamped on the body under the sill plate, but I'll look next time I have a sill plate off.

The original VIN plate rivets are a roset design (they are not round headed) They are NOT legal to possess.

If the VIN is a legit 86 turbo car than maybe somebody rebodied it. There are plenty of threads out there for people looking for new body tubs to fix the rust on salt belt cars. I have never found any secret location of VINs stamped on the tub itself. All of the numbers are stamped on the frame, engine and trans. I'm going to double check the sill panel location. As far as I can recall that number is the part number for the rocker panel.

vin location

I have just such a rusty TR that I want to put a non rusted body tub on. I have the title, vin tag , frame, trunk sticker, doors, etc. If I put it all together with the fresh-non rusted body tub, will anyone ever be able to find out and hassle me? The process to apply for a rebuilt title is a long and tedious pain in the butt, from the research I have done so far.

Re:

First are they the same years. Are you using the later trans? The title numbers should match. Thinking your doing this right.I don't know maybe some one else does. The frame may have a code. HTH'ed

numbers matching

Right now it will be a roller-no trans or engine. I don't know what year the body is from. I know it was a GN, and the chassis, vin, and the rest of the parts are from a 84 T-type. Are there any other locations of the vin on the body tub?

Hate to be a stickler for details Dave, but the partial VIN on the engine block is on a pad on the driver's side (not starter side), and also on the tranny, driver's side towards rear on the pan rail (not by the broadcast tag).

even if the numbers don't match it could also mean that the engine and tranny have been swapped out (quite common on such cars) and the car "might" be legit. It's kind of a crap shoot unless one can gain access to the frame vin, especially since the other labels have been stripped.

I attached a photo of the block id pad (hard to read)

Are you expecting any type of trouble? Personally if it was me I'd just pop rivet the VIN of your choice to the tub and leave it at that. When was the last time anybody checked the VIN on your car? A cop writes you a ticket and all you see is the tag number on the ticket and he pulls the VIN off the paper registration. You get in an accident and you're lucky if they actually look for the VIN on the car. Everything is pulled off a piece of paper. Okay you go down to the tag and title place at the strip mall for some new plates. The car was from out of state so they have to inspect it. Do you really think the girl doing the checking knows you have swapped the VIN tag? The only number anybody gives a chit about in FL is the VIN tag on the windshield. If that VIN aint been in any trouble than it's as good as done. Now if that VIN was stolen or the previous property of a criminal than that might give somebody an excuse to check it out a little closer but I dont think you have a problem unless you create one. You might go to the states homepage and check out the FAQs in the DMV section. They just passed some new kit car and street rod legistration and its pretty lax on what cant be registered as a car now.

good point

You're probably right about that. Now I have to figure out a way to get rid of this rusty piece of chit. It has no chasssis or wheels and a salvage company wants the title in order to haul it away for scrap. Any ideas? Anyone in Florida need a artificial reef?

Where are you at? I have a company down the road from me in Sanford called Empire Recycling. I take all of my cars there. You register with them by leaving a copy of your DL on file with along with a good address and so forth. You only need to fill out a bill of sale. No title or other paperwork needed. They tell me FDLE comes by once in a blue moon to check the paperwork. I pull the VIN tags fom all of the turbo cars I've had them crush for me. Not once have they physically checked the tag on the hulks. I've got a couple of NA cars I plan to retag if I ever get them finished. I'm not sure what's going to happen when they run those VINs through the system. They are out of state cars so they will need to be inspected before I can put plates on them. I could check them on the states homepage but they dont have FL titles so they aren't going to show up.

Well they are paying $7.25 per 100 pounds for cars now. You'd probally break even on the gas money if you towed it up here. I haven't heard of any yards on the gulf coast. You got any guys that tow for free? You know the signs that are up all over the place saying they buy junk cars? It might be worth the call. Just tell them you dont have any title.

Build sheet with VIN

I bought a recovered theft in 1995 with state reissued VIN# & found a build sheet with the GM VIN # in the passengers side door. You may get lucky & find another sheet under the rear seat bottom or back.
