im having a debate with a few of my friends. isnt the 350 bigger? it sounds like a stupid question, but can you visually see the difference of the extra 45 cu inches? dont flame me... just a arguement so i can show my friends... thanks.

About 45 CI :D

It would be hard to visually tell the two apart - I believe there's a longer stroke in addition to a slightly bigger bore.

Yikes i would say color :D
my 305 is a corparte blue. As for the 350's of yesteryear that neon orange paint sticks out in my mind.

I grew up on pontiacs & had very few Chebbies but I don't think there is a drastic difference on the outside. But there could be a few casting shapes that would identify it.

This post would be better at a Chebby site.

If I'm not mistaken the blocks are dimensionally identical on the outside. The way I remember it the 45 ci displacement difference is the result of using a smaller bore in the 305. (same crank as the 350) The smaller bore necessitated a smaller combustion chamber with smaller valves, or at least with valves closer together. This created poor swirl characteristics and is one big reason the 305 was always such a dog. Of course, I could be mistaken......:D

the biggest visual difference would be the 20 car gap between the 350 and the 305 in a race. my buds 305 IROC-Z's motor looks like my dads 87 Vette TPI motor.

Cant tell em apart by looking at the outside...

350 and 305 share the same stroke but the bore on the 305 is a whole lot smaller.

Almost certain the balancer on the 350 is thicker than the 305. Outside dimensions of the block are the same.

Late model 305's typically have 58cc heads where the 350 could have anywhere from 64 to 76cc heads..

Check the casting numbers to be sure...

Its a crap shoot as Ive seen both engines have the "big" damper in trucks and F bodies. Easiest way to tell on ~early 80s and up V8s is to look at the pad where the block meets the bell housing. It will have a 5.0 or 5.7 cast into it. Kinda hard to see if the engine is still in the vehicle though.

The best way that I have used is to look at the timing tab on the chain cover. A 305 is straight down behind the water pump, to set timing you have to look straight down behind the water pump. The 350's timing tab is over to the driver side a little, to set timing you have to look at an angle between the water pump and the power steering. Yes the crank and rods are the same as a 350, it's just the smaller bore for the 305.
