any one done one of these things? My brother in law was quoted $3000 from the dealer. Where is the turbo? Any help at all?

If it's anything like the Jetta, it's up front tucked under the cowling/radiator ducting. They use spring clips to hold the charge air pipes on the intercooler (jetta). Once you stretched those out, forget it. Every time on the boost...pop!

You might need an electron microscope to the see the little hill-helper they put on those things.

If it failed because it ran low on oil then id sell it. VW's in general suck big balls to work on and the front clip often has to be removed to acesss the inside of the engine.

Wow thats a big can of weaksauce right there.

so how hard is this to change?

Its a mother f---er. Its on the rear of the engine. It comes out the bottom. It pays like almost 5 hours If done a couple at work .No fun at all if the bolts are all rusted on convertor. Is it leaking oil into recirc valve?

he had it in for service and now it smokes so bad he can't drive it. Before it only smoked a little if he got on it. Now it blows smoke all the time. He is not going to let the dealer do the job. $3000 is BS for that job, can't be that bad. I have found the turbo new for $695. I have never looked for the thing so have no idea what's up yet.

My first time at the strip in my 03 Jetta 1.8t stock everything but APR chip, I lined up w/ a bone stock GN and beat it. I ran a 14.195 @ 100.xx in 90* heat on 93 octane and 22 psi on the K03 sport turbo. It may be weak compared to what we all have now, but it surprised a lot of people...including a Harley Truck the next trip down the strip about 5 minutes after that when I had 3 lengths on it at the line.
The turbos are real small, (the inlet is barely bigger than a quarter!) and can be found cheap, they are easy to change and take mods real well.
Look at vwvortex.com in the forums for a nice used one, this is the turbobuick.com for VW guys.

Awwww. It's Cute :D

I have a 2008 GTI with a 2.0 turbo motor. With a after market intake pipe, a forge diverter valve and a Revo flash, it rocks out real good.

It's a ticket machine.

Its far from the GTI 2.0 FSI. Especially after a few mods...

The turbo Beetle is a 1.8 liter non-intercooled mill. Mildly peppy, but not on the same page as the GTI. My wife drove a powder blue turbo convert for a couple years. It was good to us.

The turbo resides behind the engine toward the passenger side (IIRC). You can see the aluminum boost tube from the turbo to intake manifold if you look just inboard of the front right wheel. I'm not sure what is involved in replacing it though.

I'm a VW tech and yes the turbos suck to change the exhaust manifold comes off first from the rear of the engine and since it's a beetle it would make life easier if you remove the cowl and wipers and the plate right under that's held on by 2 10mm bolts and 2 or 3 10mm nuts then you should be able to see the top of the exhaust manifold remove that first some of the bolts you can get to from the top some from the bottom then you'll be able to see the turbo coolant and oil lines must come off , return line comes off the pan unhook eveything you can from the bottom mounts from turbo to engine also you'll have to remove the intake tube to the turbo which sucks because it will be stuck and you'll have to do alot of prying to get it out the turbo comes out from the to since it's the first one your doing expect it to take 6-8 hours from start to finish

All the turbo engines that VW/Audi make are intercooled the one in you wife's Beetle was in the R/F Behind the bumper, as is on the Jetta, Passat is in the L/F behind the bumper

Yep its a tiny side mount I/C....you have a K03 turbo, look for a K03 sport from an 03-05, they are a little better and w/ a chip you can have a lot of fun with one. Also any cheap 2 1/4" piping and universal muffler will help , if you go much bigger you lose some low end and its no fun to drive. Get a forge diverter or if youcan swing the Greddy hybrid BOV/diverter youare done forever (thats what I did)
