So I've heard about this but have never seen it. External WG on header/crossover? I want to do this but don't know where to start....

Unless you're having problems controlling boost with your current setup you won't see much difference to justify the cost or effort. Which downpipe are you currently running? If your future mods still include buying ta headers then this is definately not worth the trouble.

Why do ya want to do this?? Stock wastegate sure does work good . I did have one back in 86/87 on the crossover .. Had problems with boost with nitrous ;)

I do have problems controlling boost, but I could just be running it improperly. All my mods are below. I have an HD actuator that is sdjustable and I have it nearly fully extended and running it tuner style. I have it set at 13 but in first gear it will spike out of nowhere up to 17. Not good....and in the top of third it doesn't spike like that but it creeps a couple pounds. I have a preturbo exhaust leak so that can also be an issue, I will be purchasing a set of the TA stock replacements in a month and wanted to add an external to those, but I will not now. :)

Ported the wastegate hole?

I run a 6262dbbCEA turbo with a ported wastegate hole and it's rock solid.

If you have the higher pressure (some may call it hd?) wastegate actuator, it has a heavier spring in it which raises the minimum boost you can run. You should have no problem controlling boost from a ta49 with the stock stuff. I am not familiar with "tuner style", maybe you could elaborate?

Tuner style. Plug the pressure signal into the actuator bypassing the solenoid defines the minimum boost you can run.

I am running straight wastegate, vacuum line from compressor housing right to wastegate

I am going to have to disagree here, there is unquestionably power on the table here. We have even seen gains going from a 46MM gate that controlled he boost perfectly to a bigger 66MM gate. The benefit is even bigger when the gate is vented to atmosphere and not routed back into downpipe.

You have my interest, where does said power increase come from? Less restriction for "waste" exhaust when max boost is reached? Even on a mild combo?

Yes it does not take much to keep he turbo going once it is up to speed, I was most surprised to see the gain from the bigger gate even though the boost was already stable but it has ben repeated a few times now so it is not a fluke. I will not do a car another way

Well I retract my previous statement, and I learned something today! (note to self, buy a bigger wastegate when money permits)

Follow up question: will venting wastegate to atmosphere (or from crossover into exhaust @test pipe) skew wb o2 readings at all? (Since a portion of the exhaust will bypass the sensor). I thought about this for a while yesterday, I guess I severely underestimated how much exhaust bypasses the turbine at max boost. on the cars that you ran that picked up additional power, did you run the gate from the crossover in lieu of the stock location or run both? My friend has a turbo 95 mustang cobra and his gate is vented to atmosphere, (out of laziness). it is pretty deafening and it literally shoots out a 6" long flame at wot. Crazy stuff!

it will not change o2 reading since it is same gas and nothing gets sucked in through gate when it is open there is pressure. A longer exit on the gate will kill some noise

I put the 3" rjc pipe on today with my wego 3 wideband kit, and before the dp I was at 15lbs of boost. Now I'm around 18, should I try lengthening the actuator or do I have to port the wastegate hole? The dp has the massive internal puck.
