washers in intermediate servo??

I found 2 washers in the intermediate servo piston assembly. They were on the end of the apply pin, between the inner and outer intermediate servo pistons (part #'s 19 and 21 below). From what I can see, they would cause the pin to apply the band with less piston travel. Not quite the same as a longer pin, but the person who built the trans originally may have used the washers to set the band clearance? Is this a common practice? I plan on removing them, but have never had a problem with the 1-2 shift.

Or... a novice can add the washers to increase the apply pressure. This can destroy the tranny in short order.
