My good old ATR external gate finally died on me. Looking for opinions on a replacement. Tial or Turbosmart? Will 38mm in one of these brands give good boost control? This will be used on an ATR 3" DP externally gated through the turbine housing with ported/enlarged hole. Also running AMS500 boost controller and 6765 turbo. I like the idea of staying with a 38mm so as not to have to reconfigure the flanges as long as it will get the job done.

The new TurboSmarts are the BOMB... Buy the 50mm and never worry about boost control again, good for up to 1000hp...

THEY ARE DEAD ON!!! We have them on our race car... PM Jay if you are interested...

TurboSmart

I had never really paid much attention to the Turbosmarts until lately - I'm impressed.

John - I checked out your link - never heard of that company but it's interesting that their gate doesn't use a diaphragm which is usually what ends up failing on most gates.

I've been running two Racegates on the race car for years but they are in need of replacement. I would like to get one BIG gate that could control my 91.5mm but I'm not sure a 60 will handle it.

Actually a 50 would handle it but the 60 would for sure. The 50 has worked fine in excess of 1400 horsepower.

I can get you either one.. give me a call at the shop if you'd like me to order you one.

You can get the number off our website, BIGWOOD RACING HOMEPAGE

Jay, if the 50 can handle excess of 1400 hp, what's the hp rating of the 60? Do u know the weight of the two? The innovative progate is very heavy the Tials are pretty light. Thanx.

The 60 is supposed to support in excess of 1800 horsepower.

Ill take my scales to work tomorrow and weigh the 50 I have before I ship it out. Its not a monstrosity by any means.

Thanx for the extra effort, my concern is header or dp cracking with too much wt.

Turbosmart or JGS. Synapse is junk. I have a used 45 Turbosmart if you are interested.

My JGS 60mm will control down to 3.5 PSI on the Turbo V8 on the lightest spring.

How well will a TurboSmart or Tial 38mm control on a 3" DP running the gate thru the turbine hole (ATR style)? I need to run as light of a spring as possible to enable 5-7psi launches on stage 1 and 24-26psi on stage 2 using AMS-500 controller.

I know coming off the header is better but I don't want to hack up this particular DP as I can use it on another application if I eventually go with a 3.5incher on my street car.

Louie - is this the JGS you're talking about? http://jgsturbo.com/index2.html I've never heard of that one.

Is there a reason why? I own one and have had no problems with them.

you NEVER rate a wastegate in terms of HP

Yes thats the company. Pretty neat stuff they make. No diaphram, but using an alum piston with Orings. The 60 mm works very well for me on the V8 with a AMS500. I can regulate down to 3.5 psi.

The Turbosmart 45-48 did very well for me on both my 109 and S2. Mine was a 11lb unit wich was rock solid on control. Im sure with a lighter spring it would have worked just as well.

I would have gone with a 60mm Turbosmart , but the JGS price won it for me.

A 50mm TurboSmart will control most anything the Buick guys throw at it... its a lot cheaper than the 60.
