Does it have a weep hole if the internal seals go bad? In blunt terms, can the pump star to pee everywhere? Does a bad internal bearing sound like a grinding noise when the engine runs? Can that eat the internal seal really good? Last question, honest - it's just a standard SBC water pump, right?

I ask, becasue the TTA is losing coolant and peeing it out - somewhere, and somethign up in the front was making a grinding noise.

All the GM water pumps have a pee hole on the bottom when the bearing fails it will leak. I don't know about the grinding noise but I would guess if the bearning fails it will make some type of noise.

I think all the g-body 3.8l V6 water pump is the same, SBC will not fit. I did not have good luck with remanufatored water pumps go and buy a geniune GM water pump, spend the extra $$ so you don't have to change it too often.

Also let the car sit and check for the leak when the enigne cools down, sometime when the bearing fails the water will look orange color (rusted water color).

oh...really a wise guy now....I think you need to go home now :D

Okay, neat. Hey Derek, you ever toyed with these?

Would you like to?

If not, I can always get help form one of the guys in my Church, he's really good about this sort of thing. I'm just sort of miffed that this is occurring AT THE SAME TIME my GTA decided to blow an intake manifold seal, and that happened right after my wife's car blew her seals and pidled coolant into the crankcase.

Whew. Three, count 'em, THREE coolant-related problems, one right after the other.

Water Pump Grinding Noise

Most likely the front shaft bushing is gone and that is why the you hear a grinding sound. The shaft has vertical play and the pump impeller is probably hitting the back side of the pump. The water leak is due to the vertical shaft play which took out the seal. :(

Hey Ian,
Id help you out. Im in the process of doing relatively the same job but, a little more in depth..............like timing chain deep. I think that Im gonna finish that up this weekend (I hope). Anyway, not too hard to get at.
Derek:cool:

Ah, okay. I'll probably not get to it by this weekend, maybe I can slate it for the next one. I'll keep you posted, and thanks, Derek.

And yes, you have a nice car, too. Almost makes me want to go get a GN myself.
