What is it about those stupid stangs?

I still want a 5 speed '87-'93 LX 5.0 to this day just because of the way they sound, lol. That evil, hollow rumble just does it for me :D.

What the hell is it about them cars? I've rode in them before, don't think they're THAT great.

Good question, I'd guess it's because they look fast and sound fast and they came with a 5 speed manual but are they really all that fast? From what I understand they aren't, not unless you've got a s/c or turbo.

I do understand they're light and there's an abundance of them, not to mention a very good aftermarket for them.

But IMO the 5.0 Mustang is way over-rated, much like the Flowmaster mufflers they all love so dearly.

Well, Ive owned 5 Fox mustangs and to be honest, Id rather daily drive a 5.0/5spd car than my T anyday. The fact is we cant take our cars anywhere w/o worrying about it getting stolen. I could take even my nicest fox (mint 86 GT w/ built 351C) to downtown Cleveland and not worrying about it not being there when I left the bars. And there is something about rowing a T5 everyday. I enjoy my Buick but will probably not get another one because you cant use it like a normal car. I will give you that alot of Mustang owners are young dumb kids, but at least they dont whine as much as alot of the older GN/T owners (i.e. wanting parts for nothing yesterday).

I own both and like both. I am still new to the TB. I always liked them and recently bought my first. I was very impressed with the car. I have owned alot of fox mustangs through the years and love them. I always enjoyed building different combos. The 5.0 is just a great engine. My current fox is a supercharged 5.8 351w. Lots of fun! For me, I need variety, if I drive the same car too long I get sick of it. I always liked any car that was fun to drive. I never understood dogging a car just because it was made by a certain company; although, I can understand being annoyed by the people who drive them.

I can see getting them for the wealth of aftermarket support, but in this area they aren't cheap. 5k+ for a nice 87-93:confused: ?? That's nuts. Especially when I paid 3k for my 93 t/a. It's not prestine condition but its straight, decent paint, no rust, and the driver's seat has a little tear on the lumbar. I'd go buy another TR, or hunt down a shelby daytona 5 spd with the turbo II,III, or IV motor before I'd spend over 5 grand for a mustang. Wouldn't mind having one but the price they slap on them is crazy. And I have yet to come up to a young mustang owner with my car. Every time I have taken it out nothing fun ever happened. Then the times I'm driving my n/a car or the wife's grand am they're everywhere

I've noticed most build up on the '87 and up Mustangs but not as many are messing with the '86 and down models....is there a reason for this?

There are a couple of reasons for this. Alot of people dont like the 4-eyed look of the 86 down cars. The only year w/ efi and 8.8 rear was 86. Everything below that was carbed or cfi w/ auto in 84-85 and the weak 7.5 rear. And stock heads on 86 dont flow very good at all. Lastly, its hard to find an 86 down car thats clean, most have been beaten hard and put away wet:eek: I personally prefer the 4-eyed, ive had 2 of them, 83 GT and 86 GT. But they are hard to find clean for a good price, most people think they are worth way more then they really are.

Thanx James for setting me straight. I personally like the 4 eyed look over the bug eyed look of the 87-93 models. I also like the squared off dash more than I do the round curvy dash.

Were all 79-85 models equipped with the 7.5?

Yeah it seems the pre 86 cars are hard to find, but then again it seems even the post 86 cars have been rode hard and put away wet.

I still wished I had my old 1981 Capri. IMO it looked better than any fox body Mustang with it's squared off nose and squared off deck with slotted tail lamp grilles.

Yes, any Mustang pre 86 came with the 7.5 rear. For a stock motor car its ok because those cars really didnt make much power. But if you were going to build one up you have to go and throw that 7.5 in the scrap pile and get yourself an 8.8

James

5.0 Mustangs are dime a dozen around here. Dont get me wrong, I like the cars. Wouldnt mind having one for a toy, as long as it was a CLEAN 5 speed. And thats the problem. Most, say 80% of the 5.0s around here have been beat to hell and back. And its these young kids driving them too. I remember back in HS they all thought they were the big men on campus. Those 5.0s can be just as expensive as our TRs. Good parts arent cheap. Im a car guy. I once had my doors blown off in the GN by a Honda S2000. Granted my GN has ABSOLUTELY no traction on radials, but still. The 03/04 Cobras arent too be messed with. I was at Atco back in November and there was a GT500 there with less than 2000 miles on it running 10.70s with only boltons and DRs.

But its the attitude of the owners that makes me mad the most. They think they have the fastest car on the road. And many times the car is trashed. My brother has a 02 GT and all the time he says my GN is "just an old car" and you never see girls hanging off of GNs/TRs.

I'll stop now before I get too worked up about it...

Thanks, I guess I can see why, if they had such a lame rear and how for 87 and up they don't have to worry about it. Still I think I'd do one before an 87 and up just to be different.

At least they got 1 thing right, as opposed to F bodies never having a rear worth a damn after '81.

Three years ago before the latest gas price hike, I would see one at every light it seemed. Now I don't see as many on the street... there are some fast ones around here... but nothing to fear. At the track it seems that most are in the 13 in the 1/4 mile, I'm guessing if want to go faster it cost some big $$$$.00 But as others have mentioned on here, I like all fast cars but, I personally don't want to blend in at a car show or on the street, that is why I bought my Buick in Feb. 1984. It was different then and it's different now, and it will turn heads with the bumpers falling off or if it's a show car. The girl that I am dating now can not believe how much attention the car gets. It's not uncommon for someone to start talking to us about the car while sitting at the light or while pumping gas.
By the way another good thread,

Chuck

dont think its so much the cars as to the people who own them.
Ditto. It comes along with each car hobbyist. It's always the bad apples to put a negative stereotype on a group of car owners. A person has one negative experience with a Brand-X guy, then it seems all Brand-X guys are officially dumbasses.

Hey, as a previous stang owner I can say with 100% certainty that there are a lot of Mustang owners who are jerks. I agree it's not the car, it's the owners. The Mustang attracts a younger crowd and I think this has something to do with it. I belonged to svtperformance.com and a local website which I will not give out because of my bad experience on it. I can say as a comparison turbobuick.com and turbo buick owners compared to Mustang owners are hands down classier and just overall a better group of people. I personally would not have a profile named 93fiveoh and be posting in a turbobuick website, doesn't make sense to me?????

That says it all right there.

I think the Buick/Mustang thing should be used during some friendly competition at the strip, but other than that it seems pretty childish. Sure, a Mustang is a popular car for any 18 year old kid who wants to look like a bada$$, but if that same kid decided to buy a Honda instead then we'd just make fun of him for not buying Domestic.

Like someone else already hinted at in this thread, maybe WE'RE the ones who are scared since we're always making the negative comments about the Stangs. Much like the schoolyard bully who only picks on other kids because he has a bigger problem with himself... seems like some of the TR guys like to pick on Mustangs daily to feed their turbo-ego.

I'm not a fan of Ford products and I earn the right to say that as I have one as a daily driver, but a Mustang in the hands of a good owner is nothing to sneeze at.

I personally wouldn't have any big-bad-Buick attitude if I pulled up next to this thing....

To defend mine and others position on this topic, I don't think "WE'RE" the ones who are scared. And to compare us to schoolyard bullies??? I have owned a 1969 Mustang Mach 1, a 2004 Mach 1 and a 2004 Cobra, and I have the right to say that a lot of the Mustang crowds are young kids with the attitudes. There's a local group in my hometown and all I have done is drive my car twice in the last 6 months through town. Guess what? I've heard through my son, who is 17, how all of the local mustang guys have bad mouthed my car and say how they are going to stomp it the next time they see me out in it. Now, who has the attitude and the ego to feed? You are way off with your comments on this one.......

I agree there are alot of bad website forums out there for all car groups. The guys at corral.net, stangnet and buckeyestangs are some of the best best people I have ever dealt with. A good example of a scum bag website is viperalley.com, biggest bunch of arrogant a-holes I ever came across no class at all.

I'm glad you edited that. You worded it better. It's a shame you have had bad experiences with other Mustang owners, but like I said before, it's like that with just about any other car enthusiast group. There will definitely be some dickfaces among them. Some are just narrow-minded regarding the car they own (or don't even own, in some cases) and can't respect any other, except the make/model they own.

FWIW, I don't expect everyone to like Mustangs. Whatever car preference makes an individual happy is what people should respect. I'm a car guy through and through, so I have no beef on alternative preferences.

.....But it's what I own and I'm not ashamed of it, no matter if it's a non-Mustang board I'm on. I'm here to learn and until that car leaves me, if ever, it will be my user name as it's who I've been known as for the past five years. When I get a TR, I might change it. :D

The problem w/ mustangs, is no matter what you do, its trapped in a mustang. Also like Dodge diesel trucks, Yeah the Cummins may just be the best, but its in a Dodge, and some people cant get past that. (I cant w/ mustangs, but can w/ Dodge trucks)

Well if I had to have a Fox body I'd try to find myself one of the rare 5.0 Capri's. Kind of what the Regal/GN is when compared to a MonteCarlo. Like educated white trash. :D
