what is the best oil filter

What is the best type of oil filter? I have the oil filter relocation kit. I am looking for some thing that is not restrictive, but filters very well.

What is the best type of oil filter? ......

The best "type" of oil filter would be a stainless steel mesh that is re-useable, and it filters and it flows better than any cartridge paper or synthetic media filter. Another big plus, it cannot "track" or have large areas that will allow oil flow essentially not being filtered.

The one Mark sells fit on a stock GN very well, and the ones we use to protect high $$$$ race car engines are similar. Of course the initial cost is not cheap, but in the long run they pay for themselves as well as offering superior performance.

Now if you were asking about a stock replacement cartridge filter, the ones mentioned are among the best available. :smile:

Stay away from AC Delco they are just STP oil filters with a different drainback valve.

Old AC delcos WERE a great filter.... now...FAIL

For starters, when looking for a good filter, take the time in the parts stores and look at the filter pleat (the folds back and forth on the media) stack up (how bunched up).
The perforated internal sleeve (Best is metal) holes and flow design
Anti drainback valve (silicone)
Perforations on top of filter

These are just some quick easy "eyeball" comparos to do when looking.

Me, I like WIX (NAPA filtersare made by wix), WIX has a racing series also, Baldwin, Hastings and Bosch. (Not in order of superiority)


Never tried K&N, but feel as they are just a lil to pricey and you are paying for the name...JMHO.

Would like to take a look at the new Royal Purple Filters, havent had a chance to peep them yet.

I wasnt impressed with Amsoil filters for the price. Overpriced hype like the oil IMO. Yeah yeah Im sure this will ruffle feathers.:biggrin:

For a remote system, the Baldwin or Wix.

For a stock mounted filter, the Cantons from TR Custom Parts are tough to beat. The pressure drop is low enough that the internal bypass in the oil pump should never open, so you will always be filtering.

They also make one that fits the remote mount I think.

The one that I have used is a Trufilter, available through Jegs.

Mine is remote mounted as the TA pump feeds into the rear of my block.

Did on for a G-8 Pontiac and it was a direct bolt-on. With less restriction, you will see an increase in oil pressure. :smile:

It is also full-flow and no bypass is used. I take the turbo oil supply from there so only filtered oil get to the ball-bearings.

where would i find the cantons that fit the remote mount? I went on TR Custom and all they have is a 3 1/4 diameter ones. Correct me if i am wrong but i think that is two tiny right?

This is the one i think is the best and i've used it for 13 years along with a PTE turbo saver remote oil system.

The System One is a good unit and has been around for a few years, and people I know using them never have said anything bad about them.

Changing and cleaning the filter is easier and simpler with the Trufilter than the System One in my opinion.

Another big benefit in their design is they have removable inserts so if you change vehicles, they will give you the appropriate insert to fit the new vehicle at no charge, and they cover domestic, imports and trucks.

The system 1 when i clean it all i do is put it in a dish pan with some Dawn dishwashing liquid and wipe everything off,rinse off and let it air dry. The only thing that could make it easier is if somebody did it for me.

The system 1 also comes with removable inserts to fit GM,Ford,Chrysler.

I change my oil quite often and i wouldn't even want to try to guess at how much i would have spent on oil filters in the past 13 years in comparison with the cost of this one filter and the added benefit of being able to take it apart to inspect the filter element is great and saves alot of time from having to cut an conventional oil filter apart to inspect the element.

I don't think you could go wrong with any of the reusable filters that are available today. The initial cost is high but you won't have to buy another oil filter.:smile:

I remote 2 each Puruolator 2 quart filters mounted parallel. Most filter manufactures are discontinuing 2 quart filters - including Purolator. I might have to go to Nicks recommendation (Trufilter) due to availability.

Again, most filter manufacturers have no desire to offer a good filter anymore.
