Some of you may have been following my other post - "No boost - The title says it all"
I thought I'd post this here - since it may be turbo related.

Long story short - after checking EVERYTHING - I decided I had a turbo problem.
So - today - removed my TA49 for preparation to sending it off for rehab.

Once I got it off - let's do a shake test and see if we hear anything.
Well, well, well.

Low and behold - Look what fell out of the turbine side.

What the he$%^ is this?
(Picture)

I suspect it is from the turbo itself - and -
I think it is moot - since I have oil in the compressor side.
It wasn't noticeable before but it surely is now with the turbo off.
(See pictures)

Which means I get to clean out the intercooler now as well.

It's steel
And that would be quite the journey

Good idea.
Like in CSI...:D
I'll go snap another picture.
I actually need to start doing that more - using a reference guide.

It does - but it doesn't.
At least we now know for sure it was as you said - in the turbo.
Now the question is - what is it - and what happened?

Me - I'd rather know - than not know.
It's not like it is a brand new, $1200 ball bearing I just smoked.
I bought the car last year - so we have no idea how many good miles or spools it had on it.
To me - the price to pay - to play.

What sucks is that I really do believe I have to take the SLIC off and clean it.
I can't in all good conscience leave oily residue in there.
Now....That sucks!
I mean - whatever..what's a few more bolts?....but it never, never, never stops

Last owner probably sold the car because they couldn't figure out what was wrong. No more get up and go.

Here...
Now - let the games begin!

Weird with the elongated hole.
I've looked at it several times - and if I didn't know better - I'd say it is not distorted but manufactured that way.

I need an exploded parts view of the turbo to see if I can match it with something.

LOL -no dood.
It was a little monster for the last year.
I always tell TurboClam the story of last Christmas eve - when it got 30 degrees out of straight rolling 55mph down the highway.
(Foggy and damp - yes - but still - extremely scary!)
And that ain't no fish story either!

I only recently broke my new toy.
:(

It looks like a washer that got wedged in something

Bryan - you know you always go for maximum shock effect.

I am not intimate with head bolts (nor do I wish to be thank you very much!)
But why do you say that?
Do they use this sized washer with an elongated hole such as this?
Dood, that's a pretty small ID
I'll measure it for you if I need to.

And then - seriously - how would we have it ending up in my turbo?
That's the edge of Crazyville city limits.

I want you to remember I had the header gaskets replaced by a shop buddy of mine who I "trust"
Last year.
I was in a pinch and traveling and wanted my car fixed.
Normally - I'm the only one who gets close with a wrench.
That said - and not wanting to throw out a red herring - does this washer bear any resemblance to anything associated with header bolts ...or.....I'm wondering if it is possible that it fell off some other bracket etc during that header gasket replacement operation and - could it have? - landed perfectly in the header and eventually found its ay into my turbo?
Like the little piece of header gasket did?
If so - someone definitely needs to go to the fall festivals and try their hand at those carny games - because you couldn't drop it in a header if you tried.
But I've seen nuts, bolts and washers land in weirder spots.

Or are we way off.
Is it from inside the turbo?

AND - what's your take on the oil?

I know this sounds insane - but I am toying with the idea of scoping behind the turbine wheel - and if looked ok - bolting it back on and seeing what's what.
Insane?
Yeah - how could the wheel be ok - with that thing rattling around in there.
It's insane I know.

Remember that similar thread last year - where an OP found something similar - and everyone took their guess - until someone finally identified it as a piece of an injector that made the miracle trip thru the entire engine and into the turbo.

But again - before we go there - the $64,000 question first is - is this a normal part inside the turbine assy that has come loose?

Its not a normal piece in the turbo and seems like someone made a huge mistake. You would not believe all the stuff wrong with my car when i first went through the engine bay back in the day.

Some more hints

You know - this thing took a whack.
I'm kind of scared right now - from what.
Could the turbo's turbine actually bend this washer like that before breaking blades?

As to the elongation - I can't see how this washer could have been stretched producing that.

Fair enough - but what is it from?
That elongation should makes identifying it a little "easier"
As I said above - I have my suspicions of how it may have entered the slip stream of the exhaust.
My buddy is a racer - so he is no hack.
It may have just "happened"
I make those "mistakes" on occasion. I hate when they are huge though.

Do you have studs in the heads for the headers?? Or just stock header bolts?

The turbine absolutely could have caused the elongation in the washer if it was spooled up when it hit...60,000-100,000 rpms

Bryan

What stinks is that I think I know most every fastener on these cars - but I'm struggling to figure out what bracket or such this may have fallen off from

My guess is that it went through the combustion process. Damn!

That was my next thought, maybe in the up pipe to the throttle body, through the combustion chamber many times until it was spit out....
