I'm getting a new turbo, and need help on what to use. I have a TE45A thats bad, but it spooled like crazy. I need the car to be streetable, but with a goal of high 10's. I have a PI 3200 stall lock up. I would like to step up a little, but need to be able to spool it.

GTQ67? Or what?

I forgot to mention I have 75# injectors, GN1's, pte fm, FAST ecm, all the goodies

a 67 GTQ would be good, but it looks like you could use something a little bigger. Jay carter on T6P said that they used a 71GTQ on a stock block with heads and it kicked much butt.

If the 45a spooled great, the 71 might be what ya need!

With only a 3200 stall you might need dual ball bearings to run a 70, especially a Q trim one which you probably would want.

Jack Cotton has ball bearing turbos.

A 66 single ball bearing could easily be spooled with that converter, not sure if it's any bigger than a 45A however.

Give Jack a call, see what he suggests. :)

You have something that most guys do not have. The FAST. You could spool the 71GTQ if tuned correctly.

You do not have to always use Dual Ball Bearings to get a turbo to spool.

Give John Craig (928-453-7321) a call about the 71GTQ. You might be surprised. Make sure he knows you got the FAST goodie box!!

Limit and Precision sell Garret Dual Ball Bearing turbos. Turbonetics sell Single Bearing Turbos. Depends upon what you want.

Just an info update, we sell both single and double BB turbos. We base our recommendations depending on a customers combo and needs. I haven't seen any real advantage to the double bb turbos over the single, only more piping to accomodate them. Also, any turbo can be made to spool...........with the correct cam\convertor combo. Making things effect spoolup and need to be properly sized when putting a combo together.

Wouldn't a 71 GTQ be tad big for a stock block street car?

Isn't that a 9 sec turbo?

Scott,

Certainly not what I would recommend for what the goals stated were. Looks to me to be a perfect set up for a CPT66 ball bearing turbo. It's still a combo that would be capable of mid to low 10's with a 66. The convertor listed would work great with that turbo. I have guys running 10.50's on around 24lbs of boost with that combo and driving daily on the street ready to kick butt......

By the way, your turbo should be here Mon, tues. !!!!! Give me a call mnday morn if you can.
thanks,

Unless things have changed in the last 3 months Limit does not sell BB turbos

I started buying turbos from John about 3 months ago. The first one I bought was a Dbb turbo. It was not a Dbb for the TR, but it was indeed Dbb.

He stated that he wanted to step up from the 45a. The CPT-66 would not be much of a step up (if at all) from the 45a, especially if it is a newer 45a.

Turbosam6, I would highly suggest that you send the 45a back to Limit for a rebuild (you said it was bad??) and they will upgrade it to the newest specs. If you want, give me a call Monday morning and I will see what I can do with Limit for your 45a.

If you just want high 10, the 45a will get you there.

There is not need to pay another $1000+ for another turbo that will perform the same.

Good point Taffy, I forgot he had a 45a already. The 66 is basically the same turbo, cept for the BB option. Not sure how fast he has run till now, but according to his goals it does fit the bill. We could just as easily upgrade his turbo to a 70BB unit which I'm sure would allow for better spool up with a 3200 stall convertor. Since he stated his TC was a 3200 PI, that would be a "O" pump which means 3200-3500. I have a customer that tried the 71Q and couldn't spool it with a similar setup, maybe it'll work and be acceptable, but I doubt it. Again, his goals don't point to a turbo that big. I think we need to know what exhaust housing he was using, .63 or .82

I sent the turbo back to Limit, its being upgraded to a GT67. I had a .63 exhaust housing, FYI. Thanks to all that replied, I appreciate the help!
