I am very confused on which washers you change to adjust end/center/front end plays.

My ATSG manual (as well as digrams in the CK book) say their is 3 of them (forward cl./output, slective rear, and internal gear/rear)(#'s 629, 631, 632) but in cks book it also says that the plastic pump washer (9) also changes the front endplay? He even gives charts to see which ones you need but Im not sure which washers these correspond to. Also in a order CK gave two different plastic washers that go on the back of the sun shell, these are selective too? So now we have 5 washers to change endplay?

Can someone please clear this up for me?

Rear selective (metal) goes between snap ring and rear assembly on output shaft
Center selective nylon tab that goes between output and forward shaft

Front selective which is the big nylon one on the pump assembly.

Clearances can be achieved in other ways by using shims behind the babbit thrust washer on the center support to tighten clearances. Extra pump gaskets can be used to relieve a couple thousandths and the rear selective washer could easily be ground (or the snap ring ground a few thousandths) to adjust clearance.

The sun shell may have a steel/babbit washer that should be replaced with a nylon one or the rear support could easily be machined for a Torrington bearing. The 2 washers ck supplied are more than likely 2 thicknesses. Probably .060 and .080. The aftermarket actually made a thicker (usually black nylon) one o tske some of the slop out of the rear assembly without changing the selective steel washer since they are almost all too loose unless someone has already tightened it up.

The thicker, black plastic aftermarket sun shell thrust washer was actually designed to take up the extra clearance that would occur from having to resurface a damaged thrust surface on the low/rev clutch housing. A common occurrence in the early years when the bimetal thrust washers were used with worn direct clutch housing to unhardened sun gear shell contact surfaces.

Thanks guys,

I finally got everything I need (I think) so I will have a tranny building marathon this weekend, well see how far I get  Ill get it together and see about those endplays
