Didn't posi become standard during mid year production of the 87 Grand Nationals? I have a build date of 6/87 and my car did not come with Posi.

Steve

To my knowledge, posi was always an option on TRs, i could be wrong, but i beleive someone told me that before when i had a T-type that was also a late manufacture date but still had an open rear

It was not a standard option.
occasionally it did sneak in when it wasn't ordered though.

you should get an 86......G80 was standard:)

(at least it was on mine.....)

i believe the "late" production 87 GNs all came STANDARD with the G80 code...mine was built in september and came with the G80...not sure what month they started the "late" run of production...

Technically it was always an option - even on the late-87s. The late-87s did have a bunch of "options" that weren't really optional (I guess GM was trying to use up their supply of optional parts) but technically they were still options and appeared as such on the window sticker.

You're right, Jim. Back in those days I remember Buick using a term "mandatory option". I always chuckled when I heard or read it...what an oxymoron. :D

When they extended production in 87 all GN's had to have the Posi as part of the package.

My 86 has no RPO code for posi but someone slapped it in there before I got it.

I wonder if there were any gnXs produced without a posi?

G87 was standard on LC2 engines....however, the G80 was an optional feature.

Say you're the line leader at GM and you accidently ordered 50 more rear ends with G80. Some lucky buyers are going to get a bonus....sometimes they just use whats available to meet production quotas.

I know that in 1981 Ferd went to the 8.8 Corp and they still had some 9" laying around. Some 81 broncos and F-150s got 9 inchers in them.

Slow91z. All '86 turbo cars were T-Types. "Grand National" was a option on the T-type, and was mostly a cosmetic package. W/O digging out my window sticker, I not sure if the suspension was upgraded. In '87, the "Grand National" was it's own model. I ordered the open rear on my '86 so I would get the aluminum brake drums, and then installed a posi from US/Strange.

WOW I didn't know that!!!! So the reason mine has aluminum drums is because it was originally a peg legger??

No, yours is an '86 and GN's could come with alum drums and posi. In '87 GN's w/posi had iron drums.

In those years the federal CAFE standards were very specific on the vehicle mix from each brand and model.

GN's and T's were in different "classes" of how many could actually be produced due to gas mileage catagories. T's were lighter and were in a different class than GN's and were called lightweights?

My T-type could not be built in '86 [as an '87] because it was too heavy. I agreed to delete the power seat and power trunk release so it did not have to be re-ordered. It came with alum drums and bumper supports, no posi.

No GNX's were made without Posi...All the GNX's had the same options, and G80 was one of them. Each GNX has a certain Special 'Code' on the RPO label. The Code was 'T2L'....In order to have that T2L code the car had to have Posi rear amoung other GNX options.
