Hey guys,

We are in the process of building up a turbo 400 and are between the TCI and Hipster trans brake. The TCI doesnt say anything about if it is cast iron or aluminum or has the provision for the filter to sit in the back of the pan. The Hipster says that it is an aluminum casing and has the provision for the filter to sit in the back of the pan to avoid fluid starvation. I just want to get your thoughts before I buy one.

Thanks
John Martin

I use the Tci brake. It's a modified stock valve body. I thought the hipster was too but i may be wrong. There is a font pump mod you need to do to keep from taking out the thrust on the crank with a 400.

I went with a Hughes Performance brake and front pump during my rebuild - the directions didn't say anything about a front pump mod except for the spring but I needed one anyway and for like $90 I got it from them too.

Working great so far :D

listen up on that mod for the feed to the torque convertor. it WILL take out your thrust surface with a 400 and a tci brake. dont take this lightly!!!

I use the ATI and the Griner, from my experience the two best 400 brakes out there. These are the only two I have not had trouble with. The Hipster was the biggest piece of junk I ever saw. The first two I put in locked the rear wheels when the transmission was shifted to 2nd gear. I replaced them with the ATI brake and they worked flawlessly. Eventually, Hipster sent them back, after they finally admitted their product was not properly manufactured, and had never been tested before shipping. I also had trouble with one TCI brake, but TCI diagnosed their problem over the phone, and I fixed it on the spot.

I use the Sonnax pump repair kit and replace the stator bushings when building 400 turbo transmissions. I do not like to restrict the converter fill circuit. The proper fix in my opinion is to repair the leak in the pump.

Guys,

Thanks for the heads up on the mod that we have to do. What is it that you have to do to the front pump to keep it from taking out the thrust? I just want to make sure Im covered on everything.

Thanks
John
