The gender isnt whats important these days as very little training is offered or required. Everything is on the computer and if its not on the computer the car does not exist. That allows the use of so called Monkeys to run a store. Everyone in my store used catalogs to search a part. It was slow but accurate and required a working knowledge of the part, the car, and application. The Napa stores are 1 of the few remaining stores you will find with those kinds of parts people. They are changing also with the times, out of necessity

Makes no difference if they are female or male, I just want what I need. It’s tuff enough knowing that I have to listen to some non-hacker mechanic tell me that his Mustang can eat my black Monte or how her “boyfriend’s” Honda is built.

Ill speak up on this whole parts counter thing.

I worked for a chain auto parts store for 2 days. 2 days! When I started, they wanted to pay me 6.15 an hour (this was 5 years ago). So when I started out, they didnt show me how to do anything. Now, I know what the parts are, just not how the computer system worked, how the backroom was stocked, or things like that. Well, they basically left me to fend for myself and figure it all out. By the second day of customers being impatient with me, I walked out. The training is just that poor sometimes.
On the subject of girls behind the counters, sure there are some airheads that are there to attract business. But, I can tell you firsthand, I know a few that really know their stuff. I girl I used to go with does most of the work on her car, including changing timing belt, water pump, fuel pump, tune up, etc. She actually got a managers position at a chain store before everyone else that had been there for awhile already. The guys there dont like her very much because she can put them all to shame when it comes to cars.

I work at a parts store

At the store I work at I know exactly where my cam lubricant is. It is right by the oil pumps, lifters, cams, etc. The hose clamps are by the hoses. Etc. etc. I to suggest spending the extra buck for the EOS at the dealer. It is a great startup lube and that is specifically what it is made for. I use a small artist brush to apply it to cam bearings, lobes, lifter bores, push rod ends etc. We do have girls working at the store I work at too. If they ever have any difficulty locating a part or helping a customer they always come find someone with the "correct" answer. I only work at a parts store to get rent, food, and Buick parts money while I go to school for a degree. Not like it's a life long dream of mine. But, for a part time job its good and the discount is pretty decent too.

Just my .02
