why you cut and buff your paint

Your car looks absolutely stunning. I'm jealous.
I have a buddy who is a pretty damn good painter (does custom airbrushing) and he has offered to wetsand my car. I have seen his work on motorcycle tanks & fenders. It looks stunning, but I'm just a tad nervous if he'd F-up somewhere on my car.
I have put many hours into my paint by hand using claybar,cutting cremes, glazers, sealers, & waxes. I'm happy & it looks good, but not 100 ft deep good & mirrored like yours.
AWESOME!!! That's all I can say.
Well, maybe if we can gather up enough balls between the two of us, we can get a deal on having both cars done

This paint job was ten years old when I took these pics last summer. I honestly hadn't waxed it in over a year.
I know that someone will ask, so I'll tell you guys that it's a single stage acrylic enamel paint. Coler sanded with 1500 grit, then cut with Meguiar's #85 (not for rookies) on a wool pad. Swirl remover was done with 3M #39009 on a #9000 pad. Wax was from my secret stash of discontinued waxes. Probably Medallion.
It just takes time and patience. I would highly recomend practicing on a crap car, before sanding, or buffing the paint off your pride and joy. There is a learning curve, and much of this stuff is not very forgiving on students. Just TAKE YOUR TIME. Why do you think that it took me over 150 hours to do my car.

My son does detailing and paint correction. Most cars do not need sanding. Just a good maching polish with some wool or foam pads and some abrasives. folllowed by some paint sealer or good wax. Check out autogeek.net they have some good stuff and a decent forum. If your in the Detroit area and wants your done he will give Buick guys a special deal. If you just need some help give him a call his name is Seve and he works at the office now

John, I hate you fail to see the value in technology and advancement…...
Being 3rd generation in auto restoration, I’ve spent countless hrs in an auto body shop, with either a gun, buffer or sand paper in my hands. It’s not how I chose to earn my living but it was my father’s and his before him. For me it has been a hobby. My father has produced numerous top flight concurs show cars through out the years, that I’ve played a part of. What I’m getting at is I got years of experience and exposure to technology advancement, things change my friend.
Long gone are the days of cutting with 600 & hand rubbing out soft lacquer paints with old gray mud compounds, been there too, but it’s no longer in my thinking.

Yeah, things do change, to more and more BS and even higher prices, and more ways to extract it from the customer. I'm not exactly a novice. I've painted HUNDREDS OF CARS, and I won't be the fool who pays $8 for a sheet of sandpaper that might save me one pass of the buffer. :biggrin:

Very Nice results John......
Granted the wet DA paper was expensive but I only use 3 sheets on the last car did. All the cutting and flatten of the paint had already taken place w/ 1000. It does save time w/ the buffer and cost of compounds. So to me the $24 investment was well worth it.
With your experience I'm sure you have a palm DA, you ought to pick up the 3M foam padded replacment head & a few sheets and give it a try on your next job. Once you use it, Im sure you'd see the value in it as well.
