Thinking out loud here. I have my eye on a set of '06 Vette wheels. May want to add as much as 3.25" to each side to center the 10" wide wheel. That is beyond my confidence level for spacers. Anyone know why I cannot widen the rear end? I know I will need new custom Moser axles.

A 10" rim you will need to get the backspacind down to 4.5", I have some billet bolt on spacers with longer studs in 1" & 1.25", maybe have a set of 1.5".

I dont see a problem. There was a company that would cut off the end of a one ton rearend and weld a new one on instead of replacing the whole housing. Anything can be done for the right price.

probably easier to just get a custom 9" made instead of butchering the (rare) stock axle housing.

Check out Quicks Performance, they just built my rear end and did an excellent job!

How do you plan to r&r the wheels w/ a rearend that wide??

why would it be a problem? jack up the car via the factory approved jacking point in front of the rear tire, remove the lug nuts, and take the tire off.
it wouldn't be any worse than taking the rear wheels off the 92 Caprice i had- due to the shape of the rear wheelwell, you couldn't take the stock wheels off if you had jackstands under the rear axle housing. you had to let it hang down and kind of pull the top of the tire out before the bottom.

Wheel/tire went on easy enough with the 2" spacer mounted on the axle. FWIW, the rear wheels are '06 Vette...10" wide x 19" diameter x 78mm. I just purchased a new pair of Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 XL (295-30-19) on EBay for the rear. Should look nice.
