I have been reading your forum for a while and love turbo buicks myself. So i finally decided to join the community with a question that i could not find the answer for. What rear end do 87 T-Type with V8 come with? Do they have the 7.5 or the 8.5?

A 307 car will have the 7.5 with a 2.56 ratio. This can easily be confirmed by checking the RPO codes on the SPID label. :)

Yup I had one, had the "T" package and had a 7.5 rear and posi...G80, G89 i belive is 7.5....

I agree with the 7.5" rear in the '87 regals with the Olds 307 engine. Note that engine also has a roller cam set up in it.

The rear ratios can be quite steep. The one here has a 2.14 (no typo) open in it. Even with no OD in the tranny it still cruises nice on the highway.

So how much power does the 87 t-type have with the 307? would it be like the hurst or an ss in power?

I belive it had 170 horse, and 250 torque. The one I had in my car was a anchor, slow as a slug but very very very dependable motor...I had 240K miles, and it ran strong as and ox till I pulled it.

Olds had a 8.5 rear, usually with 3.73 gears, as Monte SS and NA regal's had the 7.5

The 307 you have was rated at 140 hp @ 3200 rpm and 255 ft lbs of torque @ 2000 rpm. Only the Hurst Olds "hi-po" 307 (vin 9) that was found in the Hurst 442's of the 1980's, was rated at 180 hp.

WOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAA............

Hold on a minute. T-Type designates Turbo regal. all T-types have the 3.8 v6 with turbo. thats why they had the name "T-Type". all of those cars should have the VIN number 7 as the (i think seventh digit of vin) which designates the Turbo car. someone needs to post some factual info on this to make me believe otherwise.......... all T-Types had an 8.5 and other than the hurst olds car all other G-body's only EVER had the 7.5 ring gear. the G codes on the build sheet determine gear ratio and limited slip, G80 was the locker and so on. my 84 Grand Prix is a 305 car with a 7.5 with 2.19 gears. the 86 gn i have is the 8.5 with code "GU6" which is 3.42 gears. only Turbo Regals, the Monte SS, the Grand Prix 2+2 (86' only 1200 built) and the cutlass with the Hurst Olds or 442 pkg. could get the 3.42 gears i believe. I dont have papers to prove this but i've been breathin G-body's since i was a little boy.

so if someone has facts they can post links to to either back me up.... or to teach me new tricks :p please do so. i believe whole hearted that what i typed above is correct.

im fairly sure t-type was just a trim package, available on many buicks at the time, but yes maybe all regal t's were turbos, that im not sure of, but the t in t-type in no way means turbo. however if it was an 87 would it not be the turbo t if it had a turbo? because t-types were not made in 87, being replaced by turbo t's.

This may be correct for '86 Regals. You could get a T-type Century, LeSabre, Riviera, etc. Generally a handling package.
For '87 it changed to separate packages:
"T" package - Handling package
Ext. Sport package - blackout trim
Turbo package - you know what !!
You could get the "T" package with the V-8, but you had to get the "T" package with the Turbo motor.

I don't have "Facts" other than my absolute word. Some T-types DID in fact come with the wimpy 307V8.

I know this as absolute, unwaivering fact... as I worked as a Service Advisor at a Buick dealership when those cars were still coming in on car carriers.
I remember specifically seeing exactly ONE brand spanking new gray T-type roll through the shop with the V8 motor in it... and thinking WTF??? This was at Baldwin Buick in Shillington, PA around '86/'87. (It's now Penske Buick/GMC)

I think the only other one I've seen is a green one that ran through Ebay not long ago.

To add... I believe the vin code was "Y", as it used the olds 307 "Y" engine with a 4bbl Rochester quadrajet on it. 1987 was also the last year for a carb.

WOW, you guys have taught me somethin today!!! i really believed that T-Type was Turbo 6 only. I'd never argue a fella that saw one come off the truck, cause i'd thunk the same thing............WTF?? LOL LOL
and after that sight it would burn into my brain FO EVA lol.

Thanks for the education.

Not to be mean, but you better go to gnttype and do some reading!

Ya you can learn a lot from these guys and also gnttype.org. Also kirban from kirban performance has a great thread (I forget which forum its in) but that's a gold mine.

Correct, the 307 Olds used in the Buick Regals had a vin code of Y. The "hi-po" 307 had a vin code of "9" and was used in the 442. Also '87 was the last year for the Regal to use a carb; the 307 engine itself continued to be a carbured 4 bbl until it ended in the 1990 model run.

my 84 Grand Prix is a 305 car with a 7.5 with 2.19 gears.

You sure about this? What trans did you get? My understanding a 305 would not work well with a 2.19 gear not to mention I've never heard of a 2.19. I know the Olds 307, which was a grunt engine could come with a 2.14 gear w/o overdrive and a 2.41 if overdrive was used. Does your engine have the oil filler tube up front?

I had a page i found about 10 years back that gave the exact production numbers of the regals (grand national, turbo t-type, v8 t-type, ect.) which i can't find at the moment but this wikipedia clip should give a little more clarity.

The T-Type logo consisted of a large red letter "T", and the word "Type" in small black or white letters. The emblems were only placed on the fenders and on some later models (1986) a grille emblem was used. The single T was only used on the turbo Regals and only in 1987. Originally the T-type name was to be an appearance package and used across the line (which it did) but was confused by the turbo Regal when the 3.8 turbo motor could be ordered with the T-type package. In 1987 Buick dropped the T-Type package on the Regal. All turbo Regals in 1987 came with the Y56 T package and have a T badge on the fenders and on the horn button. This T package is often erroneously thought to designate the Turbo T package, which is solely the WE4 Regal.

Here's one that sold and was a t-type package with the 307 v8 and theres pictures to prove it.

my fault, just a key stroke error. It should have read 2.14 a d it came with a 250 turbo trans with a lock up. It now has a 350 turbo with no lockup that has a mild shift kit. That car is my low low. It has hydraulics on it. No computer either, all has been stripped out. I put a holley 670 truck avenger on it. They won't stall out when you hop the car :) lol
