It can and was done years ago, but this is a VERY expensive process. Bosses were built up by welding on the 109 block, and then drilled and tapped for studs.
I do not remember any of these blocks that lasted over about 20 passes at low 9's/high 8's at 900-1000 HP.
With time trials and elimination runs in turbo Buick events, it was always best to have a spare engine to make it into the final rounds.
Zimmermann Racing Engines and us have the distinction of the first 109 block in a GN that went into the 8's with Cal Hartline driving here at a local track!
