well heres my problem. when i bought the car the wiring was butchered so i decided to replace it. i got a painless wiring(anything but painless) fuse block. Ive had no problems for the past four months then the alt. stopped charging. So i went and got a 200a. that did not do a damn thing. the alt plug never fit quite right so i got a new pig tail. when i was changing the pig tail I noticed the exciter wire's insulation was melted and the wire was exposed. Is the new alt ruined now? i replaced the wire from the fuse block to alt ( the exciter wire (brown)). still nothing. what do i need to do

On the stock G-body, the brown wire goes through the "VOLTS" idiot light in the instrument panel. Some of the "VOLTS" light sockets have a diode(i think) to allow the alt to remain charging if the light burns out, others don't have this. If the light burns out (or if the socket doesn't make good contact with the printed circuit sheet) the alternator will not charge. Check the light bulb, socket and brown wire for connections and cuts. This is the most likely reason for no charge.

John Spina @ Caspers Electronics makes a plug-n-play harness to take the idiot light out of the circuit, but if you've changed the wiring, this probably won't help you.

well i went a little crazy i dont have the stock dash. i re wired the whole car and it worked fine for a while. the Alt exciter wire did go to a diode then to the fuse block(this way worked fine) when the alt stopped charging i replaced it then i cut out the diode and still nothing i just hope it didnt hurt the alt

Un-excited alternator

I just went through the same thing with one of my conversions. The digital dash cluster had been out of the car sooo many times it would'nt make a good connection. I took it to a local shop that re-builds them. I had a self exciting voltage regulator put in.It turns it into a one wire alternator.Works good and only cost $40.00 I'm back on the road and I'm fully charged.

well my alt is already a one wire. i noticed if the rpms are above 1000 my voltage shows 11.4 to 10.5 but when it idles down it gets as low as 8.2 volt (this is on the scanmaster)i dont get it??
im pissed who wants to help me push it in to a canal.
