I been looking at ams line of boost controllers and they seem to be one of the best with there many features. I also see on some of these setups that they are using a co2 bottle. Is this a must with the ams 1000 or can it be used with just manifold pressure ? I am looking for a launch control feature on a boost controller and maybe a boost by gear feature also. I am also wanting to ramp the boost for traction reasons. Can all this be done on a ams 500 or is a 1000 needed ?

I am almost positive the 500 can do what you are requesting. The 1000 has more than the majority will ever use. The co2 is not necessary, unless you are planning to run one of the cylinder powered trans shifters. There are several guys using both types of units, the 500 and the 1000, on the board. They will chime in w/added info.

Is the co2 a must when running one of these boost controllers ? Also does the co2 get used ? Meaning do i have to constantly keep filling the bottle after i each pass , a few passes , etc ?

you dont need c02 but maybe you do if you track the car for consistancy , co2 allows you to run a lower spring than would normally work because the co2 i used to push the gate closed , lets say you want to launch at 5psi ( a safe level for traction on drag radials ) and want use the controller to hold it there , to do so you need a spring just shy of 5psi in your gate , problem is if you only have 5# spring and you stab the throttle you could unseat the valve with the backpressure before you reach your target and then your boost will build slowly , the co2 applies pressure to the top of the gate at the pressure you set at the bottles regulator (usuallly around 40psi) helps the spring hold the gate down and now you can build boost quick because the gate wont get popped open by back pressure

as for what you use it doesnt take much as the gate top is sealed and you only loose co2 when you are trying to control the boost , you do vent some off while on the brake and once you reach your target running boost it vents some to hold at the target level , biggest loss is leaks in the connections and if its leaking down and you leave the bottle open . i keep my bottle off except for when i'm making passes and the little 10oz bottle can last me almost all season , the bottle has a pressure gauge and you can watch that to see when its getting low and then get it refilled , i keep a spare bottle and the speed shop at etown can recharge them while i'm in the pits for around $6.00 a bottle

The co2 is an option and it exhausts to atmosphere...........never mind, pacecarta beat me to the punch.

a cheaper alternative to the ams1000 is the leash boost , i think hartline carries them

Pacecarta i have read where people fill the bottle with nitrous cause its more available, whats your thoughts on that ? E town is my regular track so that wont be a issue for c02 then.

You can control your wastegate, chute, air shifter etc with co2, nitrous, nitrogen and even just air.

If you do not have a small on board air compressor then I believe co2 is used because it is cheapest of the gases.

Some also do not want to use nitrous because in whatever class they are in it can illegal because it can so easily be misdirected to the engine.

Leashes I believe you need co2 for it to work. Ams you can do without co2

Eboost street or Eboost2 , or if u are sd2 pl can control it

I have a fast xfi doesn't that have a boost controller feature , I thought I read that somewhere ?

Yes. From what I have been told the reason people use the 500 or the 1000 u have more control on high boost with them than the xfi. But not positive in that I'm going to try my xfi first to see and also using co2. I'm leaving it up to tuning buddy's that knows a lot more than me cause its all over my head at the moment. Lol

I don't have xfi but the sd2 / powerlogger setup can control the stock solenoid or a bigger a bigger one like the new Mac solenoid u can get for 40$

I think I am going to get a co2 bottle just to see if it helps to spool my 72mm turbo.
