I am looking a TV for my office. It has NO WINDOWS and only florescent lights.

Can mount or put on a big entertaiment center I have...

I just got the Sams email and they have 51" samsung plasma's for $674:eek:

I don't get to watch it that much so kinda looking a budget deal....

first of all dont get a plasma. there not worth it. go with lcd. and as far as budget i got a 42'' vizio at walmart. they are a great product. plasma tvs have went down at price cuz no one wants them. they have a gas inside them that needs to be refilled at least every few years. lcd is way better. make sure its got the hdmi hook ups and all that stuff. and trust me WALMART is the place to shop for a great tv. like vizio.... i paid 348.95 for mine and a 6% sales tax due to the state i live in. but yea. go with lcd. and you cant go wrong.

I was thinking the same thing, LCD is the way to go. The plasmas are cheap so it is tempting...

they are cheap cuz no one wants them no more. once lcd came out every dropped plasma. not to meantion you can go on craigs list and see people selling them for cheap. oh and thanks so much for creating TURBOBUICK.COM with out this site i would be lost on repairs on my car...

Sounds like you've found a good TV for your office, but if you're looking for a budget, lower-end TV, Anarchy is right, you can't beat Walmart's prices. If you don't plan on watching Blu-ray, gaming, or watching a lot of sports in HD, then a cheap lcd from Walmart is what you want. They have a ridiculously low refresh rate, so they're good for watching DVDs and regular programming, but that's about it.

The whole reflection/glare thing with a plazma is overrated IMO. I've got a plazma in my living room directly across from a window. If there's a glare, I close the blinds. I usually only watch at night anyway.

Plazmas and lcd TVs have come down in price because LED TVs have come out....not because of some mystery "gas" that needs to be refilled.

well thanks for the mystery gas confirmation. its just something a sales man told me at WALMART. so i was just relaying the message...lol.. dont shoot the messenger....

CompUSA up here has a refurbished 47 inch for $599. I bought one. Its a great TV.

LOL...not taking a personal shot at you...but that's what you get for getting your technical information from someone who works at Walmart. ;) I was there a while ago, and I had to step into a conversation between a "salesman" at Walmart and a customer, when I heard the sales guy tell this lady that she didn't really need an HDMI cable between her new Blu-ray player and the new 1080p LED TV she just bought. According to him, a simple coax cable would give her the same picture quality. These people work in appliances for a few months then go to toys, then sporting goods....you get the picture.

got ya... lol.. thank god they dont sell any turbo buick stuff at walmart...

I have a 54" Plasma in my HT room. I love it. I also have a 54" Plasma in our living room.
I am not concerned about the clarity of the TV because its usually so loud it blurs your vision anyway. Just kidding...the pic quality is very good.

Another vote for Vizio, I've got two of them. They work awesome!! Phil.

I think it comes down to personal tastes.

Plasma's imo reproduce a better picture than lcd hands down. They still do somewhat suffer from "burn in" if left on for hours and hours and hours on a picture that has a static logo that is bright, but they have gotten better by pixel shifting the entire image to avoid this, it's not that big of a deal anymore. Plasma's do have a fairly reflective front coating on the glass which doesn't do too well in highly bright areas, like lots of windows and do use more energy and can become great little heaters in the winter.

LCD's have gotten better, but imo, they all still suffer from how quick the lcd pixel can shift from state to state. Most approach around 5ms or less, but in complex scene's I still can see alot of pixelization, but some sets handle this better than others, again..personal preference and you get what you pay for.

One thing that has been affecting both Plasma and LCD's are the quality of the capacitors they are using in the set, and I've seen more LCD's croak after 2 years than plasma's. I think thats because the plasma's run a little warmer, they have been using better quality components. Personally I don't like Vizio's. They look great, but they don't last and good luck getting support out of them. They will funnel you to "their" repair depots to get fixed, and they will not even let you buy schematics or replacement boards. Thankfully their have been enough people parting out vizio sets on E-Bay to get parts.

I would also caution buying from Walmart because they have beat up the supplier so bad on price, that the ones sold to Walmart usally are lower quality units or off model numbers with less features specific to Walmart. Have also seen units that are several years old being sold as new, 2009 models being sold as 2011.

The one thing that you should do is always make sure the set is plugged into a surge suppressor at a minimum. This will help the switching power supplies in these sets last alot longer, they don't like AC voltage spikes that will occur from your local power utility.

We have a 42" Samsung plasma in my bedroom and we love it. I have 2 friends who have a 42 and 55 lcd. When i look at their TV something seems off to me. The picture is just different and when the people are moving around on screen it seems the transitions are off or something... Its difficult to explain. You can definitely tell the difference between the lcd and the plasma and i prefer the look of Plasma. I will be buying a 58 or larger plasma for the living room when we move. I vote for plasma BUT check your elevation where you live because they do not work well in high altitudes.

Good luck!

LCDs are very "cartoonish".
Their darker areas have lower shading detail compared to plasma....they're usually just *blackish*.
That looks impressive to some people, but it isn't natural.
A lot of people don't realize that LCDs tend to be rated grey-grey for their refresh rates, not black-black.
That's going to affect the picture quality in faster motion scenes as well.

I think I am more confused than before now;)

Mainly watch cable in HD on it but there will be some Blu Rays and my sons PS3 from time to time so I guess I need to take that into account as well...

Refresh rate, I know the higher the better but what is recommened for say BluRay?

Go with the plazma. The refresh rate is usually around 600hz. The faster the refresh rate, the better it is for gaming, Blu-ray etc.

I did alot of research before I bought my TV for my basment movie room, ended up with a 60" LG Plasma, Love It, HD Sports are just awsome to watch now.
Would like to get mine calibrated to get an even better picture but costs about $250
Do not be affraid to buy a plasma, they use more electricity and run a little hotter but excellent picture and much better in moving scenes.
