If you've had a code 42 please list your "Fixes". Thanks, R.B.

I've seen several times where the plug on the module was not making a good connection. Doing a little cleaning and tightening the plug usually gets it. You might have to inspect it closely. There might be a bad connection inside one of the wires/terminals.

Regards,
Eric

Thanks Eric, I've checked the module connection several times and also cleaned it without any results so far. Man, this is really getting to be frustrating!!!

Hey Eric, the new chips that you're sending me don't have a built in code 42 ban do they? LOL.

Come on guys, I know a lot of you have had to have had this problem too. Please tell me what specifically fixed yours. In the past 8 months I have replaced: coil pack, ignition module, injectors, turbo, plugs, plug wires, tps, iac, timing chain, torque convertorm lt-1 maf, ecm and I'm sure I've forgotten a few things. Thanks, R.B.

I'll second what Eric said. Had a similar problem except mine was a code 41. I went ahead and replaced the cam sensor and the ses light came back on. I checked each wire to the computer closely and sure enough connection was bad. It states you tired another ECM which I was also going to suggest. Good luck.

Most of the time a 42 is a bad module. See if a friend whose car is in stasis for the winter will loan you theirs for a week or 2. Its like 5 mins to swap it out. (Swap the whole deal, coil, module, bracket. 2 13mm bolts and a 10 down in back. 9/32 for the plug. If it fixes it, throw a module at it, if not, give your friends unit back, nothing lost but 10 mins or so.

Jim, I had a brand new ac delco coil pack and ignition module installed recently. Also tested it with the Casper's tester. It tested just fine. Thanks, R.B.

It has been my experience that when a car throws a code 42, the usual problem is the module, ecm, or both. That is assuming you have no wiring problems or loose connections.

Caspers tester simulated cam/crank signal, not high/low on the EST line.

By memory, which isnt that good anymore, 42 sets when EST is commonded to change state and the ECM hasnt heard back from the module that it acknowledges the change. Causes are ECM, module or wiring. Check for continuity on the est line from the ECM to module, verify the ecm is sending a high/low signal by watching the est line while you start the car, the line should change once the motor hits 400rpm. If it changes and the module doesnt acknowledge it, the module is bad. I dont care if you bought it yesterday. But for accuracy sake, hit gnttype for the diagnostic tree for that code to do it 100% right.

Hmmmm...eons ago I had a Bonneviille w/18x crank sensor throw a 42 and it was the crank sensor, but I cant say if this couold even happen in a TR

Jim, thanks for all of your help. I have spliced and re-routed the est and bypass wires from the ignition module to the ecm and ran them inside the car. These wires should be good. Yes? How do I find the diagnostic tree that you mentioned on gnttpe.org? Thanks. R.B.

P.S. I remember posting back in August about a code 42 problem that arose while checking to see if my fuel pump was priming. I could turn the key to the on position and listen to the fuel pump prime, then turn key to the off position and repeat 2 or 3 times and when I started the car I would get a code 42 everytime within about 10 seconds! Does this help diagnose my problem any? Thanks again, R.B.

Curious.....when you get a code 42, does the car stall (est problem) or is it down on power (bypass problem)??

Nick

When this happens under accelleration it will start cutting out and popping. Then the ses light either flashes once or it will stay on with a code 42.

Can anyone explain what is happening when I turn the key to the on position and then the off position ....do this four times, then start the car on the fifth turn and automatically get a code 42??? Crazy huh? Thanks, R.B.
