If she is addicted to caffine also, it would be a good time to have her cut back. Get offa coffee, switch to tea, which might have more caffine it, but I din't believe is near addicting as coffee, & do whatever it takes to get offa niccotine. Patch, hypnosis, etc.?

I have been a pack day smoker for 4 years, I know its not's as bad as some long term smokers, but I am still not happy with myself. The past two weeks I have been in a class at the Hospital to help smokers stop. It is helping and they provide vouchers for the patch and gum, So I am going to give it a shot. Good luck to everyone who wants to stop.

In about 2-3 months after you quite, food tastes sooooo much better. Be prepared to gain 10-20lbs. Good luck

FWIW & IMHO:
Yes, you will probably gain some weight, but there are ways around that, exercise, for one. I would rather be fat, or 10 lbs heavier, than pay the cost of cigarettes, & exborant taxes imposed on them.

Well, I had to ressurect this thread because I am now getting to the point where enough is enough. I want to quit.....it might not be this week- heck, might not be this year, but I want it to happen. My problem is I really like smoking. I started when I was 14 (I'm now 28) and have been doing a pack of Camel non-filters a day for half my life. I think that changes in my life over the last couple of years are really what is convincing me that I need to quit. A few years ago I was always dead broke and was basically miserable so living a long life really wasn't of any interest to me. Nowadays I've got a wife, a new daughter, a business, a new home, etc. so I think I need to stick around for a while. Also, my mother, father and brother all died very tragically and early which leaves only my kid sister and I.....and I want her to have someone to ask for help because she's a young kid in college and I'd really like her to have somewhere to go like I never did.....if I'm dead, she's the only person from our family left. I'm not sure where to start, but I think I'm gonna be attempting to quit in the not so distant future.

It's simple just don't smoke. 3 months after you quit you'll realize how simple the concept really it.
However it's not that easy. This is how I quite:
Smoke 4 per day. one in the morning, one at lunch, one after dinner, and one before bed. Even this will be tough but stick to the schedule. Do this for 2 weeks, by the end of the 2nd week that cigarette will be giving you a buzz. Then just stop cold. Now for the next 3-4 days will be the toughest and most intense thing that you will ever encountered- just live through it because after the 4th day off, your body should not be physically addicted anymore. The toughest part is now gone. For the next few months you have to deal with psychological part- the suttle urge to just go and smoke. This is easy to deal with- just don't do it. After 3-4 months you won't even think about smoking, food will taste so much better, and you'll be able to breath.

Good luck

I chew Copenhagen,,,,,quit for a while,,,back on for awhile. Nicorette 4MG gum helps a lot. Plus it keeps my mouth busy doing something.

I didnt care for the patch cause then I still wanted to snack or something else with my mouth.

I've actually consideredthis....I get a can of chew probably once or twice a year just for fun and I've never gotten hooked on it.....I figured it might be a good alternative just for a couple of weeks.

Easy Sylvan,,,this stuff is just as bad for you.

If you really want to quit try the 4mg nicorette gum,,,will pack a nice buzz and still give your mouth something to do.

Well, I've done the gum before and found myself growing accustomed (read: addicted) to it. Chew, although not good for you at all, has never really been addictive for me......but I can't do the Cope', mainly Kodiak.

If you are gona go,,,go Big

I smoked a pack a day for over 10 years,And enjoyed every minute of it......I always said to everyone that When the time comes...I will be able to quit and never look back....

The day My 1st daughter was born,That was it...I had my last cig,And never had another again.(4 Years Ago)No Patches,Gum,Or any other type of crutch...Just Stopped...Like someone else stated here....when you are really ready to quit....It really is very easy.I tried a few times when I really didnt want to stop...Had trouble,When I knew It was time...It was easy as can be.

I told myself That I wanted to be there for my Daughter as long as I can(Graduation,Wedding...And so on)Things that My father missed in my life...And smoking just wasnt going to help that happen at all....(I lost my father when I was 11,And know what its like to lose a Parent at a young age). He was a heavy smoker...And died at 52 of a massive heart attack.(I couldnt even explain how much I miss him...:( ) I wouldnt want that for my Family.

Who knows...I could still pass on at a early age....Im just not going to Increase my chances of that happening by smoking.

For yourself and your Family...I hope you find the willpower it takes to quit for good...You have it in you,You just have to really want to do it!!

Best of Luck to you,
Shawn

Shawn, sorry to hear about your loss, I cant imagine how tough it was.

NJ,,Ill get ya bud:mad:

i say go with the patch and a ton of gum.thats what i used and havent had a ciggarette in i guess 2 or 3 months now. start out with the strongest patch and just keeping using it for a month or so. it will suck when you stop using the patch but that will only be for 2 or 3 days. also, try to stay away from bars.:D

If this is really true, then just lay them down, and walk away. They're not more then a habit. I smoked for over 20 years, and had some rather stressfull occupations, and *dumbly* enjoyed every cig to some degree. Right up until I wound up with a serious lung problem, that manifested itself in ONE WEEKEND. In 2 days I went from being able to climb 12 stories of steps, into not making it up one flight. Lots of people abuse their lungs without reaching that final step, but once you do, it's over. The lungs never recover from the damage done by cig smoking. Stopping will SLIGHTLY reverse the process, not you'll never exscape the damage you've done.

It might take several attempts to quit. If you fail once, just deal with that, then deal with whatever the trigger was. Not to mention you're tossing several thousand dollars worth of income into the trash, and killing yourself in the mean time. You might spend some time googling about blebs. The longer you smoke before finally quitting, the more likely you'll have to deal with a collapsed lung, if not ALOT worse.

IMO, swapping addictions, isn't an option. It just makes other leaches, richer, IMO.

It's not easy, but it does get a litttle easier after about 3 months. I haven't had one for 11 months and counting. I Smoked since I was 14 years old and I'm now 31. I just gradually started smoking less and less until I only smoked on the weekends, then just stopped all together.
