O, ok. So is that some kinda high speed camera or something? How much do they cost? What are their applications?
 
i have read that this movie was shot on a budget of $30million- that's pocket change these days. that's made-for-basic-cable money.
it made that money back on opening weekend, and the rest is all gravy from here on out. hopefully, this is the model that is used by all new movies.
i hope to see it- maybe tomorrow.

just reading thru the Wikipedia page for the movie, i see that the special effects were done by the group that did all the special effects for Stargate:SG1 series and the movies that came after the series ended and Stargate:Atlantis.
this explains the low budget- those guys do some incredible stuff with low budgets. they learned how to do it on the cheap over the 10 seasons of SG1 and 4 seasons of Atlantis.

In the end it's just another brand of camera but the new saying is, "You can shoot with film, video, or RED". They're pushing the envelope when it comes to cameras and leaving the other manufactuers in the dust.

All of the creature effects, however, where done by Weta Studios down in New Zealand. That's the company Jackson started up when he did LOTR.

Kind of but not really. The RED is an 100% digital HD cinema camera. Right no it shoots 4K resolution at 23..98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30 fps. It can shoot high speeds at 3K resolution 50, 59.9, 60 fps or at 2K resolution 75, 120 fps. It also has the capialbilaties of ramping. Which the RED can do either 3k 1-60 fps or 2k 1-120 fps. That's an overview of the RED's speeds. Now for cost, you can buy the body ONLY 17,000 dollars. That might seem like a lot but the ARRIFLEX D-21 body is like 150,000 dollars to buy. A decent RED package with Zesiss lenses will cost around 30,000 compared to a 300,000 dollar ARRIFLEX D-21 package. This is one of the reasons why the RED dominates the Independent film market is the cost factor. As for applications the RED has a PL mount so it can hold 35mm, 16mm (2k resolution only) lenses, also you can mount nikkon lenses to the camera. 12 Megapixel sensor. has a button called false color which when you press it, it will look like an infer red image. but this button is for lighting purposes, and for image information loss. i.e. orange through purple areas on the screen will mean loss of digital information. So this is a big improvement to help the Director of Photography when he lights a scene. It also shoots in RAW format, which is a digital eqivant to color timing of film. You can think of it as a one light process of film, where you can easily adjust the color temp, change the contrast, brightness, recovery without any image loss in post production. It does a lot more, but this is a short overview of the RED. Every film I'm the Director of Photography of I request the RED if were not shooting on film because its the closes to film money can buy. I wish this Independent feature I'm DPing right now is on the RED, but the Producer said they didn't have the post budget for it. So were shooting on a Cannon HD camera which sucks in my opinion.
 
I forgot the down fall of the RED, the noise it produces during takes. you can't hear it between takes because of the fan being on while not recording but every sound guy I met complains about the noise coming from the RED to the point where there putting sound blankets over the camera during takes some times, which I find very annoying at times.
 
All I can say after watching it last night is that it was not what I was expecting. I was completely suprised by what the storyline was.

That being said it was a good movie. No spoiler and no review. Watch it for yourself. Not for the kiddies either....

Exactly. I wanted my money back after 30 minutes. I was expecting some war of the worlds type of movie. Not some documentary on evicting aliens that look like overgrown grasshoppers.

Aw c'mon man! Too many people turn their brains off when watching a movie. Try seeing something that will make you think once and a while. :biggrin:

I saw shiny pictures and was won over instantly.


Actually the only advertisements I saw for it was a billboard in Universal City in Los Angeles as I was driving through it...looked cool.... and it was next to Vivid Entertainment headquarters..
