At what point does an air filter honestly become a restriction?

The reason I ask is because I run this filter from the local autozone

PowerAdder Short Cone Air Filter, RED

It sits right before the smog can right behind the driver's side headlight. My setup isn't too radical - built/girdled 109, ported stock heads, comp 208 cam, smc alky, TE44 @ 22psi, 009 inj, TT 93 chip, hooker exhaust.

I'm just wondering if at this higher boost of 22psi I'm at if my air filter is THAT much of a restriction. I ran this same brand filter on my 95 Turbo Cobra @11psi. I'm not looking for replies of buy so and so's $450 cold air kit to gain 5hp over where I'm at. Is this air filter able to pull the cfm needed for 22psi with my setup?

Id be willing to bet the filter flows more than the stock MAFS. I easily did 559whp/706whtq through the stock MAFS with one screen. I doubt the filter would cause any major restriction on your build. I think the airflow requirements are about 1.5 cfm/hp on the inlet side for zero pressure drop. So 400fwhp=about 600cfm required.

This looks to be a good filter in design. The inverted cone end is a must to minimize turbulance. It would be nice if they listed the cfm flow, 'cause that is the determining factor as to whether the filter will become a restriction for your motors capability. As for filters vs no filters for max HP, I just ran 137mph at the track a few weeks ago, with plenty left, through my "Intense Performance" filter ( rated @ 1300cfm ). Brian

so the stock MAF would be a restrictiong before the airfilter in this case. So at what power level should you change the stock MAF out?

you'd have to make a hole for the ats sensor-- my cousing bought this same filter for his buick it didnt have it, he had to make one temporarily until he gets a k&N.

or you could just zip tie it next the air filter

Its not worth a couple hp difference to want to experiment. The first and only time I tried this, I injested something and took out a couple of my compressor fins:mad: , $500 dollars later I was back up and running on a brand new GTQ70 turbo. I will never try that again. Ever!
