I have a question for you guy's! Looking to see if you have ever ran into this before.

Okay, The problem is: After going WOT my car seems to get this rattle under the car (like it's coming from the converter) It sounds like a peice of gravel in the converter....???

When starting the car cold @ idle = No Noise!
When starting the car cold and driving it around (babying it) = No Noise!
When driveing it several miles (still babying it) & warm @ idle = No Noise!

After the First time getting on it (WOT) @ idle & while driving = The Noise!
And after that, the Noise stays there untill the car cools down, then back to - No Noise!

It sounds just like the multi-disc converters do but it's not one!

I was told it was a Art-Carr 9" N/LU 2800.

* I was under the car and noticed it is a small black 9" converter, NO MARKINGS on it where my last art-carr had them.

* I also noticed that the converter is spaced out from the flywheel using what looks like 1/2" spacers! It also appears to be pushing back on the flywheel too.

The trans shifts fine, it drives just fine, but it sounds like crap with that noise!

Not a tranny expert, but...
Had a simular issue about 6 months ago. Long story short, tranny/converter was making noise, turned engine off, crank it up again and noise would be gone, do it again and noise would come back. Ended up being being a broke fin in the converter that would lodge/dislodge and cause the "rattle". Not sure if this is the same as what you are explaining but something to consider.

Another thing check the flexplate for cracks /loose bolts they are bad about crackingbetween the holes

...I also noticed that the converter is spaced out from the flywheel using what looks like 1/2" spacers! It also appears to be pushing back on the flywheel too.

The trans shifts fine, it drives just fine, but it sounds like crap with that noise!

I'd pull those spacers and verify clearance between the flexplate and converter. I can't imagine needing that much to take up the slack, 3/16" is ideal. My son's car made some pretty awesome noises after his converter ballooned and wiped the thrust in the engine.

Trans Pulled

Must give a big thanks to Len Freeman for taking the time out of his day to discuss this issue with me and help me out!!
Donnie brooks & I pulled the trans, Flywheel and converter today!

After inspection of all three, the problem looks like it's the converter! For one it don't even look like a 2004r converter, The clearences are completely way off of a typical 2004r converter (Reason for it having to be spaced out so much).
Checked the Flywheel - No cracks at all, Looks fairly new!
Checked the end play on the crank and it's fine (right at 4 thou).
Checked the pump & Input shaft - Everything is fine!

Picked up a nice PTC 9.5" N L/U converter today from another board member! :biggrin:

I Put both these converters together on a table and there is more than a 1/4" differance between them!

The PTC converter & trans will be going in by the end of the week..

Update!

Well here is an update to the noise I was hearing.

After further inspection of the trans, flywheel and converter here is the diagnosis.

The noise ended up being the puck in the downpipe rattling!!! The damn puck was completely stuck alittle open and it was rattling from the exhaust and it had to be tapped with a hammer to move it!!! I don't know who's downpipe this is but this issue needs to be addressed!! After MUCH cleaning with WD-40, Kroil and other stuff it is real loose now, Just hope it don't build up and freeze again!!
The sound was traveling down the exhaust that runs right next to the flywheel & converter and was making it sound like it was coming from one of those two. At the engine bay you couldn't here it. What made us look further was, The noise was STILL there with the trans out.

The converter that was originally in it - IS FINE, just don't know who's it is!

The trans will be droped off at another members house so they can go though it and make sure it's fine.

I'm going to be sticking with the PTC converter! :smile:

I will post up the progress after the trans is looked over and the converter comes.

What converter did that brand and size??

Not sure who made it, There is no stampings at all on the housing. (except for the number #700) Thats it!

The size is a 9" or 10" NLU (2800 stall)

Update!!

Well I got the (Dusty Bradford) PTC converter back and I also got my trans back from my good freinds Todd Lyle & Mike Stallings.

I installed the converter & trans today and WOW! A HUGE DIFFERENCE!! :biggrin:
The shifts are nice and firm but not harsh!
The converter flashes right where it needs to!
The converter stalls right where it's supposed to!

Dusty done an Awesome job on this converter!!
Todd Lyle done an Awsome job on the trans!!

The converter is a 2800 stall N L/U and it's great!

The trans had a new GM 10 vane pump installed
A .500 Boost valve Installed
A .298 Intermediate valve Installed
A new Non-lock up valve Installed

Thanks Len Freeman for the added advice on this trans!!
It really works nice now!!!

That Downpipe is probably an early ATR,they were notorious for sticking.I had one,my brother had one,my brother-in law had one and two friends had them,They all stuck.We contacted ATR and were told they had a new flange and that it had to be sent in and welded on to correct the problem.I sent mine and it never happened again,But all the others were replaced with Terry Houston's.

It's coming off for the third time now. It's obvious now that just carb cleaner and cleaning it DON'T WORK! now it will be grinded off and I will modify the sleve myself! IF that don't work, New one!!!
