Anyone ever had anyproblems with their Modules or Coil Packs? Center Coil went bad today and upon removing the coil I found that the ignition module epoxy was real soft and bubbling in certian places. (Might explain the car stalling from time to time and backfiring lately). So I'm gonna replace both as a unit and AutoZone has the best price and wanted to know if anyone has had a problem with the quality ect.....
Thanks for the Input

While I have not had an issue with their aftermarket coil/module I have had MASSIVE issues with so many of their other parts - about all the parts stores use cheap-a$$ stuff.

Just today exchanged a brand new power window switch.

I believe they carry Wells brand. They are junk. Totally unreliable and can't even be tested with a Casper's coilpak testor. I have literally dozens of them, that look like new,...........and don't work. Either they won't start the car, or pop under WOT, or if they work good, when you shut the car off, the car won't restart. I repeat.......they are junk. ;)

Get your self a type two Ignition Module/coil pack and you will be go to go, good luck. Bose

Is this a direct replacement type deal? what do I need to ask for exactly when I go get this tomorrow?

You don't need to go with a Type II. Just get an ignition module and coil pack from GM and your set, there is a warranty. Make sure all your grounds are good- get the Casper's ground strech kit. I just went through all this with Autozone last year- junk!!!!!!!!!

I was just looking for the part number's, can't find them but i think it came on a 86 rivera, but i am not sure, I hope this help's and they are cheaper then type 1's,

Replace the $50 GM coil every 6mos. Thats what i do. Never a pop at WOT. Regrounding in a junction box is a good idea, but the ignition just grounds through the bracket. I ve seen 2 cars in the last year that had the negative cable on wrong. One was a TTA and the cable was attached to the painted unibody. Not even on the engine  . Ive seen corroded cables too.

As far as the type II......

Here is a list I started.... (I am sure it is not complete... but it is a start) for potential donor cars for the type II stuff....

Coil Donor Cars
Year Body Model
96 A Olds Ciera, Buick Century
86-88 C Olds 98, Buick Park Ave
95-97 G Buick Riviera
90-98 W Chevrolet Lumina/Monte Carlo
92-98 J Pontiac Sunbird
93-98 K Cadillac Deville
87-98 J Chevrolet Cavalier
92-98 N Pontiac Grand Am, Olds Achieva, Buick Skylark

Module Donor Cars
Year Body Vehicles
86-88 A Olds Ciera, Buick Century
86-87 E Olds Toronado, Buick Riviera
89-92 N Olds Calais, Buick Skylark
92 N Grand Am
86-88 H Olds 88, Buick Lesabre

Someone else may confirm this the be true....... these came from a Hollander manual.......

I second that! Years ago I went through three Wells modules in a row one time from A.Z. and none of them would even start the car. Got my money back and bought one from NAPA and it lasted quite a long time.

Just got a Module and Pack from GM today, Turns out that the OEM parts were CHEAPER the Auto Zone :D
No point in buying aftermarket considering the facts now

Still interested in the Type II convertion tho, what all required to make the swap?

I went to the junkyard.... armed with the info I posted above.... I bought two modules/coilpacks.... for $80 untested..... I brought them home.... drilled a couple new holes in my original coilpack mount.... and plugged it in... and hooked all the spark plug wires up..... it doesn't look exactly like the type1 ... all the spark plugs hook up on the same side of the coil.... instead of 3 on one side .... and 3 on the other.... for the type 1...... I had enough slack in the plug wires...... cranked right up...... tried both modules/coilpacks..... both work......now I have a spare....

HTH

I have a spare also - it's an offical GM one. I tried the wells units and they suck.

Hey guys. What are the advantages of the Type II over the original equipment?

advance auto carries GP Sorenson electronics parts. i have had there unit on the buick for afew yrs now with no problem.

The type 2 stuff has a stronger fire for sone simple reason. it has 2 power wires tied into it. At least on the factory type 2 cars. one power wire is for the ignition module itself and the other is for the coil packs.

i have thought for yrs that the igniton system on these car needed to be hot wired to the alt to get better performance.

One advantage to the Type II is that it uses three separate coils, instead of a single "coil pack", and you can replace them individually. There is also a small electrical advantage- like maybe 5% more current? Not sure about the actual number, just that the Type II is a little "hotter".

The type 2 comes with a mounting adapter bracket. If you would have grabbed that to than you dont need to drill any holes. A plug and play in other words.

The type 2 can be made even better by using the GM/Delco alcohol coils.
GM part number 1106008 Delco number D546.
These were devolped for the M85 cars back in 91. It takes more spark to light off alky than gasoline.

I've used the type2/alky coils on my cars. You cant see a difference, seat of the pants. They may help in fast hot starts is the only difference I noticed.
