I recently picked up a 1989 200-R4 from a caprice. It was supposed to ave 150k on it. Last night I started tearing it down.

Well, pics are worth a 1000 words so check out my website at: http://www.geocities.com/dorianlb/

I was originally going to rebuild - now methinks only a shift kit, perhaps a new servo and have the TQ converter freshened up.

Question: what is that silicone plug on the side of the tranny (bottom pic).

Cheers,

D.

All the clutches in my trans looked like new except for the ones in the direct drum. They were down to metal on metal.

So, it seems hard to tell actual milage on a trans by a visual inspection of the internal parts.

BTW, the pan magnet is a stock item. And, as you can see, it is indispensible in cleansing ferous particles from the fluid.

silicone plug

The silicone is covering the end of the pivot pin for the parking
pawl. There should be a cup plug under the silicone plug.
