Belt Tensioner

I am a new owner of an 87 GN. Love the car and hope to keep it a long time. I have a noise under the hood and it has been diagnosed as the belt tensioner. I read earlier that you can rebuild these tensioners instead of buying a new one. Is this true? I know you can put a new wheel on them because the bearing goes but what about the rest of the tensioner. Is there a part #? Thanks.

Just crank the pulley off the arm[forget what size wrench],and press in a new bearing[6203?].Reinstall.I think Dayco makes a replacement pulley and bearing ass'y if you want.

Yes, the bearing is a 6203. Very easy to replace and if you need a bearing let me know I'll be glad to help out a fellow Canadian

And correct me if I'm wrong, I believe it takes an 18mm wrench on the tensioner nut.

It could be the bearing, and it's pretty easy to change, and readily available. It could be the belt is stretched and the idler puller is at the end of it's travel. Also, it could be that the spring mechanism is broken/worn, or otherwise beat. I don't know if you can rebuild the entire assembly or not....... Anyone know?

Thanks alot Warpspeed. I replaced the tensioner pully/bearing and the noise is still there. Does anyone know if the tensioner is rebuildable.

Pulley is off, now is the bearing swap something I can do at home with ordinary hand tools, or do I need to take it into a shop? Don't wanna tear up a new bearing pressing it in.

Not difficult. Just tap or press the old one out, and the new one in. A bench vise and a socket makes it easier.

OLD POST - TENSIONER BRG

I just read this post and am wondering about the P/N for the brg.
Whose P/N is it (6203) and is the pulley also a replacable part, what P/N for that?
Does the parts store look this up by year, make of auto or is there a number on the brg? Thanks for all the help.

6203?

The number is a "universal' brg number that can be cross referenced to most all mfgrs. It's also a brg that's used in alternators.
If you have changed the pulley assy and the noise is still there, look to see if the edge of the pulley is hitting the bolt that's sticking out of the alt mount. This is common w/ belts that are stretched or are the WRONG length to begin with.. Close on this belt length IS NOT OK in this case.
Not the belt/ not the brg/pulley? How bout the Alt brgs? The WP brgs?/ All can make noises in that area.
