Hey.....it's about time I freshen the rear of my 87 GN.....where best to get the ring and pinion set? Jeg's has a kit for $180 I have heard (richmond ).

How about the outer axle bearings?

Is there a vendor that sells all of this in a nice neat package?

Thanks

Chris

What is wrong with your ring and pinion??, if all is OK just freshen everthing up, Gears are Us who advertises on this site , his name is Wayne and great to do business with, I have bought from him twice, great service.

That is a good question.....A friend of mine who is a mechanic and knows these cars well drove it and said at the 115,000 miles where I am it is time.

The symptoms are a whining noise and a light crunching sound while driving. The crunching sound seems like it is coming from the outer area toward the wheels.

The whining changes tone with acceleration and decel.....could just be the noisy walbro fuel pump?

Should I get a second opinion before I do this? Some say "oh, they all do that!" I just don't want to ignore a possible safety issue.

Thanks again....any advice is appreciated

IMO get a second from someone that knows rear ends.
I had over 200,000 miles when I "thought" it was time.
The mechanic said that all the original bearnings appeared to be fine but..... I was changing out the posi that was going bad so I went ahead and had all bearings and gears changed out.

Now I have over 150,000 on those parts.

Sounds like you need to put Posi additve in ,to get ride of the chattering sound-try that first,.

Mine made it to 218 K  posi lube would prob get rid of the chattering like was just posted . I would get another opinion

Okay I'll try the posi lube. And get another opinion. There are plenty of other things I could spend money on....

Thanks guys....

Chris:cool:

If its whineing, Ill bet the pinion bearings are going, but not necessaraly the gear is bad. Id drop the cover, pull the axles and inspect from there. If you dont have to change the gearset, Id leave the oem in there and rebearing the rest. The oem gears are going to be the quietest of all.
Just my 02
Good Luck
