im lookin to buy a new converter for my car to replace my old laggy red stripe this winter! just wondering what u guys think would be a good match with my car(daily driver, want to keep LU). i think everything important is in my sig! ive heard certain converters can be harsher than others on mostly stock internals of a trans? any experiences with this, if so what converters?

Thanks
John

Edge makes a nice 10" L/U converter. A 3000 stall would probably work well with your combo.

I have had good luck with Vigilante and Neal Chance. PTC is getting good reviews too. As well as the 9/11. There are others too.

I'm running a PI Vigilante 3200 L/U, with a stock long block, with similar bolt-ons. While running around town there is a slight increase in RPM to get going, but once I stick my toe in it, at about 10 feet all hell breaks loose. This is with MT DR 275/60R15, at about 75-80 feet the tires finally grab. I've been running this converter for about 2 years now, it was a much better match to the GT6152 than the Orange Stripe I previously had. My tranny has been rebuilt and beefed up (previous owner), however I am unsure of exactly what was done to it.

PTC non lockup billet stator 3000 stall.

cool guys:biggrin: keep'em coming! from what ive read stall for my combo is lookin around 3000-3200.

have u guys noticed if any of these converters r harsher on stock tranny's or r they all about the same? i think it was brian on here said vigilante was harsher than others but for the most part they r actually easier on stock tranny's because of the less rotating mass and what not, but its been awhile!
thanks!

I have a nlu so this may not help, but I can't say enough about the convertor I got from CK trans. At first I thought it was too tight. Then I got on the trans brake and  . Had no issue with it and have many passes on it. I will buy another one from him when I need to replace it.

do u know who makes it or is it a CK converter? 9.5"? thanks

PTS 9/11 works great on the street in Melissa's GN AND on the strip:p LU also

at what power levels or 1/4 times does the billet stators and front covers become necessary? prob. will get one but just doin my reasearch before i invest!
There is no power level per say. It depends on the owners goals more than anything. A billet stator unit is more adjustable than others. A couple hundred rpm's either way is easy and wont throw the converters efficiency away. The results that have come out of these is almost unbelieveable for the price paid. Guys are picking up 3,4 and 5mph without giving away on spool up. 3-5 mph on a 125 mph car for $1k. Not a bad bargain at all. They are pulling the engine down up top and coupling nicely resulting in more room for rear gear if need to potentially improve 60' even more. I saw a TSO car pick up nearly 5 mph and drop about 1k rpm up top. That is huge. The non locking converters such as this are much more efficient than a lock up while its unlocked. Its also less destructive than shifting with a locking or locked converter. They are lighter than a lock up unit resulting in better 60' and less rotating weight. There is also less that can go wrong with a non locking unit. I used to be big on lock up converters but since these bargain heavy duty units have become available i have changed my liking a lot. Contact Dusty Bradford for a PTC. They do have lock up units if you would like but they cant be built with the billet stator as far as i know. What is your current slip up top? Id imagine at least 10% with the red stripe unlocked. Id be willing to bet it will be under 5% with the above mentioned converter.

I dont know it for sure because i left my tach setup in maryland, in michigan now, but i know im below 6000 and above 5000:) if i had to guess i cross the lines around 5600 or 5700rpms, my current street tire is undersized at 25.6", and i am at 117mph converter not locked at the end of the 1/4! so....8.5% slippage. not horrible for $270:D will i notice any diff. with a N/L on lets say a 700mile drive?

From what I've read and the numbers that I've seen guys here provide, the PTC convertors from Dusty really are the best, if you're looking to spend that much (I won't name any figures, talk to him and see what he quotes you).

I have a Pat's Non-lock 3200 converter and am happy with it so far but I want to get some data logging software so I can calculate slip % during a run.

yea that what im seeing as far as converters. the general price ranges from going around diff. websites seems to be 700-850, all billet front covers, and then the pats is around 450-500. i'll have to atleast get a quote from Dusty, i wonder if he gives student discounts:p

as far as the N/L units, how r they for long drives and daily drivers? if i really dont need it much then i could get rid of it. does anybody have any gas mileage #'s with the N/L units? thanks guys!

I don't know who makes CK's convertors. And as far as steet maners, it drives like a stocker, and still has good milage

For you I'd probably do a 10" l/u. It's in the price range your looking for and it will retain lock-up. The non lock is the nicest piece but it's more pricey and more for guys who prefer track over street.

This 10" is standard cover

Will the lock up hold up at the track?
