Stock headers can be fine. Mine are not cracked. Much depends on the application, low boost, not racing then weld them. If you have bad stock headers the new ones from TA are an good choice if you got the coin. I'll run mine until they crack and if they do then I'll weld them, no biggie.

There are also ways to strengthen them so they are less prone to cracking.

put a little anti-seize on the threads

Chuck

I have put anti-seize on those bolts before and it turned to a powder. I had a hell of a time getting those bolts back out... for me no more anti-seize I had to chase the threads in the turbo to clean that crap out. BTW I did not have it in there for more then 200 miles.

hello people; What material was used in the original THDP?

x8. Rjcracing.com I use Jason's houston style pipe with stock headers and fit is great. AND made in the USA. I can't say I picked up any hp though over the stock dp @ my power level. It looks good though and will be there for my next turbo!

did i read the topic right ? I thought he asked for BEST ? Stock headers are chit they crack easy and have to be rewelded.

Original owner of my car for 23 years and I have at least 700 dragstrip runs on my car which runs 10's with no problems whatsoever with my stock headers.

just removed a 3 down-pipe that had four modes and steel raddled .Sled a TA pipe in this morning , fit perfect no more raddiling agents anything. Two Thumbs Up

ATR SS headers there is nothing like the sh!ty stock headers . You can say what you want but all the guys running stock headers have welded them at least once and when you start running over 20psi they just want hold up. Now as far as the DP the THDPstyle is one of the best out ther / RJC/ TA/ Gbody all TH style but and there's always a but if you want the best in boost control find a ATR ext wast style DP and ATR SS Vband clamp headers like I did and some very good Copper gaskets with new SS header bolts and never ever worry about it again. I had the stock headers and yes there fine until you go over 18psi then you get flange issues and driver side crack and on and on. If your lucky enough to find some real ATR headers and areal ATR SS DP like I did you will be very happy. Don't let anyone BS you ,the stock headers are junk!!!spend the money and get some new SS TA stock repl. Or you might find some ATR Vbands . With the atr DP you want have to port the sh!t out of your turbo to get control over your boost. I had a RJC with a 6262BB just about bet me up but I got it with the ATR SS Ext. Gate DP good luck

Ok, so it's become very clear that stock headers and a good dp will get you into the 10's as long as they stay together. Let's say your stockers are junk and you are going to replace them with something new that will bolt right up with no issues. What do you buy if price is not the deciding factor? For instance TA Peformance offers two different styles along with TR Custom Parts (site link doesn't work right now). What factors cause you to jump up to TA's racing headers vs. their stock replacement?

I'll have to say that TA realy stepped up and made some realy nice stock repl. headers . But and remember there's always a but I don't like the 2 bolt flanges. It would have been great if they were 3bolt because the 2bolts can get bent and twist , or a vband would have been better. I guess if they would have been 3bolt or vband they would not be stock repl. . I would go with the TA stock repl. and a Gbody or RJC SSDP. But there's nothing like a nice ATR EXT. Gate SSDP for boost control.

BuickGN also has a nice stock replacement set on his site. I too have had to repair the stockers way too much. Mark says he put a set of the SS headers he sells on his car with great results and better spool up. TAs are also the way to go if you have the $$$
