My stocker had 150K on it before it let go, and it let go becasue I'm an idiot. I was testing a boost issue and wired the gate open. Couldn't catch it in time and overboosted. Huge scream and then done.
I think you mean wired it closed. Ive done that in the past but it still wouldnt go over 26 psi for me. Just wanted to see if it could take it and it did many times. My best et's with the stocker were at 22-24 psi though.

It should be noted that the surging i referred to in my first post was with the throttle open. Not closed like in a manual trans application. You can still get a lot of surge with a small exhaust housing and wheel and big comp wheel at low engine speeds witht he throttle open. A bypass valve would not help this situation.

Spool up is tricky to talk about, mods are huge and most guys don't record boost while logging to say ex, full boost by 3400.

I don't think there was ever a test done on one car that logged PSI and RPM while swapping turbo's, that would answer these type of questions.

Problem with the Blow Off is that they are around $150 to $250, then you need the flange, weld on the flange and maybe a spring kit. If you can pull all that off for less than $250 or $300 you are doing good. Easy swap for a car that came with a blow off, more $$ for us. And if you are like the average GN owner, your current turbo will be on the car for about 3 years, never needing a rebuild anyways.

You could take the money you would spend on a BB turbo and buy a journal bearing turbo and a good converter to go with it for a matched combo. I had a 6776S journal bearing turbo and 3400 Vig multi-disc and the spool up was violent. It would cut low 1.4 60's off the foot brake with no problems. I changed over to a PT-70 p-trim and with the same converter and it spools up so fast it just blows the tires away. I am not opposed to BB turbos but I just don't think they are required in most cases when the combo is right.

What are the symptoms you see for the compressor surge? Rattling or damage? I get a rattling noise when I boost and don't let off the gas slowly. Is that the surge?

yes, thats the surge, or 'compressor slam' as we call it. remember, like a flexplate or a torque converter, the turbos compressor wheel doesnt INSTANTLY stop spinning, the SECOND you lift off the gas pedal, BUT, the throttle plate in the throttle body DOES close instantly though. so where do you think this air ends up? exactly, backing up against the still moving compressor wheel. Does it damage it? not really in small and medium sized turbos. (it CAN, but its very few and far between that this happens) In bigger turbos, its a little more of an issue. still, not many run blow off valves so, you'll be ok. Im just a little paranoid thats all.

wow, thats crazy. I just cant imagine all that power, coming on soo fast. My turbo spools VERY quick, and I dont have all my quickspool mods done yet either. and she tears the tires up quick too. I cant imagine a turbo that winds up this quick, has WAY more breath past 90mph..

I have a GT3255 with a 10" 2800 stall and the boost is insane. I have to prime my alky system several times so it has a chance to keep up. I also had to ramp up how fast the alky ramps up. If you are just cruising around town and touch the gas it is in boost. But I agree with everyone else, it is how everything is matched together.
