I'm concerned my transmission might (or hopefully not) be slipping ... rebuilt the engine and the transmission been sitting (with oil in it) in the garage for 2+ years before being reinstalled (with new converter, oil/filter change) but felt a bit "weak" when I first started it, topped up the oil properly and felt better but not 100% sure as I've not driven it for so long ...

What's a good "in-car test" I can do to feel if each gear works properly?

If it slipped the fluid would smell bad. It would only have to slip once at WOT and you would be able to smell it.

So even with new fluid it would smell if it was slipping on 1st, 2nd or 3rd for instance?

Not done a WOT as I got a newly built engine in there and only driven the car about a mile or so sofar and only up to 3rd ...

Just thought it felt a bit powerless in 1st when I drove up on some ramps recently but did not want to rev the engine too much at the time, topped up the trans fluid after that as it was a bit low and just want to make sure the transmission is ok ....

Just my opinion

I am a firm believer that you need to take it easy for quite a few starts before going WOT with new clutches. I just recently had my truck trans freshened by one of the best 4L60 builders in the US. The more I drive it the better it shifts. When I first picked it up I could not really tell much difference--definately better shifts now which is a week later.

Jan,

What stall converter did you put in?

Ive definitely noticed this on my rebuilds as well. Almost all of them start to shift firmer after a hundred miles or so.

+1

It follows the same principle that brake pads need a breakin or bedding in procedure before being put to hard use.

If your new converter is higher stall than before that will give a softer type shift at lower rpm's
