I am doing a 200-4r conversion into my 62 chevy Nova convert, my question is that i bought a lockup wiring harness from tpi that they say works well, is this better than the brake switch type or even the vacuum type????
I don't know if one kit is "better" than another. To me, the kit that does the job I ask of it , for the least cash , is the better kit.
I would put a N/C "brake" switch in the circuit, though.
While that kit will function and is easy to install, my opinion is that driveability with that kit isn't going to be real good. Everytime the transmission shifts into overdrive, the converter locks simultaneously and stays locked regardless of throttle position.
This could make for clunky operation and sluggish part throttle overdrive acceleration like the old Ford AOD. This is why the TCI kit integrates a vacuum switch into the system so that under acceleration (less than 8-10 in. vacuum), the TCC unlocks. We also have the wiring configured (via a new internal harness) such that it's possible to manually lock the TCC in 2nd and/or 3rd too, if desired.
As far as price, well...that's not discussed here. So click these links and make up your own mind.
I thought the tpi kit would lockup when there is a certain amount of pressure built which is achieved by RPM so when you let off the throttle i disengages, Is that not true? also in my case with the stock 6cyl where do i get the vacuum from. I don't really care on what kit i use I just want it to work and i dont think I need to lockup in any other gear as my car is just a driver not a race car. I am open for suggestions as this is new to me. I just want the tranny to go through the gears and lockup in od when on the freeway and unlock without hitting a toggle switch.
