Quick question, does the 3 bolt setup get rid of the twin scroll feature for the EFRs? Which would impact the turbos performance? If so why not use an exhaust housing like the stainless V-band styles that Tial makes instead of the 3-bolt configuration to help with spool, weight, ease of mounting etc?

You have good questions, but until we have more experience with the BW turbos in turbo Regals, you will only get opinions which I am going to voice some of mine here as I have done about aa dozen mid-10 sec. GN builds this year!

I opted for the smallest/tightest exhaust housing which is not a twin scroll, but my thinking is it will spool very quick and have instant response!

Researching the twin scroll data, the most improvement I have seen is with rather small displacement engines and there is only a slight improvement, especially in higher range of the RPM band.

Even a stock turbo Buick will come up into the torque band very quick and keeps increasing with RPM, and even non-ball bearing turbo can spool very quickly if the combo and tuning is done properly.

My car with the BW turbo has a displacement of 270 cu.in. and very well ported TA alum heads which provides LOTS ot torque from the start, and absolutely no lag. The 11" wide drag radials make for an awesome leave with a TE-45A, so it will be interesting how the BW turbo will compare?

With a 3 bolt housing I think the BW EFR turbo will not have as good a response as the 4 bolt version, and it still depends on 30 year-old boost control set up which is out-dated in my opinion, even with an external gate.
 
wondering if there is any new news on these builds with BW turbos and if any more on the 3 bolt housings, or has anyone started making headers to run with the twin scroll turbos that you can purchase but i imagine they are custom builds
 
Great thread! Glad to see that you Nick, and the others are embracing the new technology. I guess for someone like me I feel my car is already over the top on the street running 26 lbs on the precision jb 6262 as traction is always a concern. I can't wait to read the progress Nick, good luck with the final details to the BW instal.

Nice to see that people are finally figuring out there's much better turbo options out there then Precision. In fact it seems like the only people using Precision turbos are people who own GN's. What I don't quite understand is y'all make it seem like using a Borg Warner turbo on a GN is like trying to solve a riddle wrapped in an enigma.....like solving Chinese arithmetic. I don't get it.... I'm going to use a Borg Warner turbo. Spoke to Reed at Works he asked me the specs of my motor, rear, and tranny and he advised me which turbo to use. It'll bolt right on.....no issues....nothing to figure out....and I'm an idiot when it comes to this shit! All's anyone has to do is read some of the stage 2 forum threads and you'll find plenty of people there using them.

There are Borg Warner turbos that'll bolt on but not the EFR series which is in my opinion by far the best turbo on the market.

Here is the "Christmas" update!

The custom Powerstroke IC pipes have been coated, and also the down pipe is installed and high-temp coated.

Plumbing for water and oil have all been completed. The oil drain was a PIA as the pan was removed to weld on a bung for the oil return. I did not feel there was enough gravity "drop" for the oil exiting the turbo with the turbo position I selected.

No air filter yet as I need a specific size to fit behind the headlight.

The engine now runs on the stock ECM with 96# injectors for e-85, and the FAST XFI install is the next step.

The alum inner fenders are under construction, and are a few weeks away.

After I secure a few items, it will be ready for shakedown cruise! :)
