Broke during a launch at the drag strip over the weekend. The rod holding the spider gears was even forced into the side of the casing and opened a small crack (last picture). Both c-clips for the Moser axles were laying in the bottom of the case but neither axle came out during the carnage. That was the original posi unit but I did have Richmond gears and they looked pretty good.

My new Auburn Pro posi unit and another set of Richmond gears should be here tomorrow. My car is at Richard Clark's and he drilled an taped a hole over the crack and put in a threaded plug that we hope will be OK. He is also concerned that the case may be distorted and not be able to line everything up during reassembly. Have to wait and see.

You are very lucky that the axles did not come out. Have you thought about C-clip eliminators?

Damn Jim, what were you launching at ? yOu are very lucky the axles didnt come out and damage your beautiful car !!!!!!!!
Good luck man

Nice carnage. I have broken open carriers before in a heavy 4X4 with bigger tires and a straight shift, but never seen something come apart like yours.

My stock 87 GN rear got me into the mid 10s in a 79 Malibu, leaving on the trans brake. I did upgrade to all Moser parts before it broke though.

Using the 2-step at 3,100 rpm, no transbrake.
Sure glad the axles stayed in.

Did you replace the retention bolt that usually snaps off the last time you had it open? That is likely what happened to cause the pin to move I would think.

PS... pm if your rear ends up being not useable.

I'm not sure about the bolt, but I don't think it was replaced previously. This one was bent though.

I'll PM you if necessary.

Probably a dumb question, but could my new Edge tc have contributed to this? The car has run A LOT better since I replaced the PTS 9-11 with the Edge. The PTS would only brake stall to about 2500 whereas the Edge goes to 3100. Maybe the Edge was getting more torque to the axle. Just a thought.
