There's a write up on a build of a new TA block twin turbo done by Duttweiler. I just got the mag today and saw it.
Just a heads up..
P.S. they list the cost of the build as $35k.. Made around 700hp if I remember right.

The engine had small twin turbos (GT-30) maybe and is planned for a dune buggy. It did mention the turbos were too small and bigger ones were on the way but the 700hp was on 114 octane and around 16# of boost with 22 degrees of timing. They expected 800 on the 114 gas with the new turbo's. It was far from a high hp drag buildup. I'd bet 800 hp in a dune buggy would be a nice kick in the pants. I think I'd have to crank the boost up and see what 1100 felt like

Why in the hell would you spend $35K to make 700 horse? I can think of about 100 ways to do it for about 1/4 the price.

I guess he wanted the top of the line stuff that would never break...

Why the hell would you use 114 octane for just 16# and 22*?!

Doesn't matter what turbo or how many boost is boost and I could do that on 93.

I thought the same thing. Or how about who would spend 35k on a motor for a dune buggy????

Somebody like me if I had the kind of money to do it :p

Money doesn't mean that much to some people. Too bad I'll never know what that feels like.

In that part of California you would be lucky to purchase a 30 year old trailer for that price with no land.

It's actually a very detailed build of describing and showing many of the parts including the new TA block. I was surprised. It's got about 5-6 pages dedicated to it.

In the article it states KD says the combo would make 1200hp with bigger turbos and in full race trim.

1200 hp for $35K still sucks. Anyone read the Car Craft where they made 1000+ hp on a crate big block with aluminum heads and a blower? On pump gas if I recall. They had about $13K in it I think.

You aren't adding in the cost of custom twin turbo headers, both turbos, the motec system, probably lots of other custom stuff that isn't mentioned.

Motec - $4000
BB Turbos $-3000
Custom Headers $3000
TA Block- $4000

That is already $14K and I just started

Billet crank $2500
Billet rods $1200
Custom pistons/rings $800
Heads $?
Intake $?
gaskets,oil system,oil pan,fuel system....the list goes on.

its easy to see how the price goes up quickly with a high HP fuel injected, forced induction motor.

Heck with just machine work and assembly on my shortblock was $1600 on top of the price of all the parts, lets not forget all that too.

I got probably 15K or so in my long block, lost count a long time ago.

Yes, a big block with a blower. Only 1000? I agree, 35k is a lot of money but it's an exotic build, not a big block. You don't have to have a lot of power in a rail that weighs 1100 lbs.

Since when was it cheap to produce big HP from a 231 inch (give or take) pushrod V6? 109, Stage or TA? It stops getting cheap when you push the 109 past the point where it becomes TSM spec. What is that - 500 HP? 600 HP?

I'm not at all surprised to think a fully decked out TA block with all the ancilliaries would cost $35K. I doubt any Stage or TA guy would be either.

RA's wisdom still applies today. Go past 11.5 and you're looking at major $$$ and lots of attrition.

I find myself gravitating toward the Gen III and IV stuff - how about you?

being that its going in a sand rail, traction and load are at very minimal. Small turbos might be a necesity???
